If the readers can't seem to make sense of the characters actions or thoughts that's because they were badly written.

The MC's character was half baked, you are telling us that someone willing to work in a less than ideal dead end job with an exploitative boss is suddenly passionate for adventures? Personality changes are more gradual, you should have shown why and how he changed his personality and profession etc. He could move to Minas Tirith and make his engineering skill work. He would have a much better life than being Orc fodder in the wilderness.
