Breathing Blue

On a beautiful night as spring began, a woman was rushed to the hospital with her flustered husband beside her. She was going into labour and three hours later, two baby girls were born to the unlikely couple. They went home soon after, their little family feeling complete. The babies looked nothing like each other but the parents quickly realised how strong their bond was. The older would get fussy and the younger would wail if ever they were separated. They cooed and awed and found it adorable. Unbeknownst to the happy couple, the older was born with the power to protect and ultimately, destroy. Something they would find out the hard way.

I lean over, switching off the alarm for what seems to be the millionth time. I groan and roll over, wincing when I land on the floor. I really hope that nothing bruises. I mean its bad enough that my wrists are dark hues of purple. Its an off putting sight and I'm grateful that my nose didn't bruise.

I stand up slowly, stretching out. The cool morning breeze makes goosebumps rise on my skin. I shiver slightly as I walk out, making sure to be as quiet as possible. Em is still asleep and luckily, nothing else happened. Once in my room, I take a quick shower. The warm water soothes my achy body and wakes me up. Nothing is as relaxing as a shower. I wrap a fluffy towel around me as I study my reflection.

The dark bags under my eyes don't look too bad but, they're still there. My eyes are hazy, instead of their normal clear blue. Other than that, I look perfectly normal. I pat myself dry and look out the window to observe the weather. Despite it being six in the morning, the sun is up, and I can feel the warmth radiating from its rays.

I frown. I feel like absolute hell, yet the day is chirpy and warm. Stupid freaking day. I walk towards my closet and pick an outfit fitting for this day. I pick out a pink bandeau and a plain wait skater skirt that falls a little past mid thigh, throwing a blue denim jacket over the outfit.

Feeling a slight breeze that makes goosebumps rise on the skin of my legs, I pull on white thigh high socks, sliding into my shoes. I leave my hair down in its natural waves. Satisfied with my outfit, I dab on some concealer to hide the bags under my eyes and proceed downstairs. I get to work making breakfast. I cook some pancakes, bacon and put coffee on the pot. Despite my distaste for it, I really need coffee and so does Em.

I hear her soft footsteps as she comes down the stairs and I smirk.

"Goodmorning Em," I greet as loudly as I can laughing when she winces and pauses mid step. She groans and clutches her head in her hands, continuing to walk. Yes people she is still hangover, even after all I did. She's such a lightweight. I wonder why she drinks at all.

"You're evil Snow, plain evil." She says with a sigh, sitting down to eat. Em parks the car at school a few minutes later and we head towards the main door. I would drive but unfortunately, I've never passed the test.

I nervously tug at the hem of my skirt when I feel people's eyes on me.

"Relax Snow, you look cute." Em says reassuringly and I look at her. Her hair slicked back into a bun with a few strands framing her face, a red halter neck top tucked into black jeans shorts, cream wedges on her feet and black sunglasses covering her eyes. Of course I look cute next to you. I think bitterly then sigh. It's not her fault I shouldn't be so rude.

She meets her cheerleading friends at the main door so we part ways. I've never really got along with any of them. They all seem so fake and sometimes, I don't trust them around my sister. She's so much better than them and I'm sure they can tell.

"See you later Snow," she says with a smile, waving goodbye. I smile and wave back. I meet Isa, Leah and Aaron by my locker.

"Hey guys," I greet with a smile. Isa pulls me into her arms.

"Pet!" She exclaims excitedly. "You look cute," she says as she pulls back, giving me a once over. That word again.

"Snowflake!" I hear someone shout from across the hall. I cringe, looking in Jay's direction and seeing all the unwanted attention he got me. He picks me up and twirls me around before I can focus too much on that.

"I missed you," he says as he sets me down, kissing my hair. I laugh lightly, shaking my head. So dramatic.

"You saw me yesterday," I respond. He shrugs and then proceeds to hug Isa and Leah and I notice Leah get flustered. Hmm. I don't have enough time to ponder as the bell rings and we head to class.

Lunch rolls around slowly and I drag myself to the cafeteria when the bell rings. I sit down at my usual table after I get lunch and on instinct look for Em. A hunched figure in a dark hoodie catches my eye and my brows furrow. There's something familiar about those broad shoulders. He seems to have isolated himself from the rest of us, sitting alone at a table at the corner of the cafeteria. As if sensing my eyes on him, the lonely figure turns and makes eye contact with me.

The intensity in those dark grey eyes makes my breath catch. I can't find the strength to look away and I don't want to. Everyone else fades away and it's just him and I.

"Snowflake, are you okay?" I hear Jay Jay ask from beside me. I turn to him, confused by his question and startled by his presence. I'd actually forgotten that there are other people here.

"I'm fine. Why do you ask?" I inquire curiously. He looks very concerned.

"Well, I've been talking to you and you haven't replied. You were just staring into the distance and your face is flushed," he says in reply and I bring my hands up to cup my cheeks, feeling the warmth of them.

"Oh, sorry about that but I'm fine," I reply to him. He looks skeptical so I lift up to kiss his cheek.

"I'm fine Jay OK?" I say with a soft smile. He relaxes, kissing my forehead and going back to his food.

I turn to look at Tyler again and this time he's glaring at me. I flinch at his gaze. Sheesh, bipolar much. I look down at my fries, pushing them around in my plate. I didn't do anything wrong, why would he glare at me so powerfully? I sneak a peek back at him to find the same harsh expression on his face before he looks away.
