Breathing Blue

On a beautiful night as spring began, a woman was rushed to the hospital with her flustered husband beside her. She was going into labour and three hours later, two baby girls were born to the unlikely couple. They went home soon after, their little family feeling complete. The babies looked nothing like each other but the parents quickly realised how strong their bond was. The older would get fussy and the younger would wail if ever they were separated. They cooed and awed and found it adorable. Unbeknownst to the happy couple, the older was born with the power to protect and ultimately, destroy. Something they would find out the hard way.

hurt,

I find an empty seat somewhere in the back of the class. I have AP biology right now and I'm really not in the mood. I just wanna go home and catch up on my sleep. The coffee I drank in the morning wore off during fourth period and now I'm more tired than I was. This is why I don't drink coffee people. I place my head on the table with a groan. I don't lift my head when the bell rings, I still don't lift it when I hear someone plop down onto the seat next to me, I still don't when I recognise Tyler's scent, even when the teacher walks in, I still don't.

"Okay class, today we're gonna do something different," our teacher, Mrs Biggs says. That makes me lift my head, curious as to what she's about to say.

"I've decided to give you guys a project that's not biology related. Pass down these booklets and I'll explain what happens," she says, handing out booklets. I observe it with a frown.

1. What is your partner's favorite colour?

What exactly is this thing.

"Well, I recently discovered that you kids don't get along and that is bad synergy. We are giving off a bad vibe to the universe," she starts seriously. I raise an eyebrow at her. Really? The universe? Really?

"So any who, I put together a little booklet to kick start your friendships for you. I have listed down a series of questions for you to ask your partners so that you can get to know each other," she continues with a smile,"and the best part is that the person seated next to you is your partner," she giggles excitedly, clapping her hands together.Oblivious to our noises of protest.

"You have two weeks to complete this assignment and just so that you take it seriously, it counts for 30% of your final grade," she say cheerfully. My mouth drops open. Is she allowed to do that?

"Now, make arrangements with your partners," she commands, sitting down on her chair and starting to write something down. I gulp and turn in my seat to look at Tyler.

"Um....h-hey Tyler," I greet softly. He clenches his fists in his lap and looks down at me. I flinch yet again at his harsh gaze.

It may be my imagination but I swear his face softens. I swallow nervously when he doesn't reply, playing with the hem of my skirt.

"So....umm.....when do you wanna start the project?" I ask quietly. He silently mulls over my question.

"We can start today," he responds, breaking the silence. I sigh my shoulders sagging in relief. I open my mouth to ask where we should meet but he beats me to it.

"Meet me in the parking lot when class ends. We'll go to my house," he says authoritatively, leaving no room for argument. I just nod my head and turn back to sit properly in my seat. I look through the booklet as I wait for the bell to ring. I shift in my seat, feeling my thighs stick to my chair. It's not a nice feeling. I look around and notice no one's wearing a sweater. Well, except me and Tyler. I consider removing my jacket but I catch a glimpse of the pink bandeau I decided to wear and vote against it.

Instead, I unbutton one more button so that only the last two are buttoned and start praying for the class to end soon. The bell finally rings what to me feels like hours later. I hastily pack so I can get to Em before she gets to cheer practice.

"Em! Hey Em! Wait up!" I call to my sister, frantically jumping up and down to catch her attention. She turns and raises an amused eyebrow before stopping.

I hold up a finger and place my hand on my chest, catching my breath. I really need to exercise more often.

"I wanted to tell you that I might not be home when you get back," I state, waiting for her reaction.

"Where are you going?" She questions with a frown.

"I have to do this project for AP bio and my partner says we should go to his house," I answer, not telling her who my partner is.

"He?" She teases, wiggling her eyebrows. I feel my face flush with heat.

"Relax Snow, you'll probably be home before me anyway. Bennett is taking me somewhere today," she says excitedly, bouncing with glee.

"Oh, cool. I'll see you later then," I say with a forced smile, turning sharply on my heel and heading to the parking lot. I spot Tyler and make a beeline towards him.

He hands me a helmet with a smirk. I put it on without a second thought.

Stupid heart with stupid feelings can't take a stupid hint.

Why! Oh god! I think I'm gonna cry.

"Snow, are you okay?" I look up to find Tyler looking down at me, his hand on my shoulder. Why does everyone keep asking me that? And what is on my head?

"Why am I wearing a helmet?" I ask, confused by the plastic thing on my head. He smirks and pulls away.

"We're going to my house remember?" He asks, lifting an eyebrow. I look behind him at the shiny black motorcycle.

"Woah, is this a YZF-R1M?" I ask, side stepping him to observe it

"A capability of 183+ mph, 200 horsepower, 999 cc crossplane-crankshaft equipped four cylinder engine, GPS mapping system...what are you doing with a superbike Tyler?" I question, turning around to face him.

He looks at me with wide eyes, opening and closing his mouth like a fish.

"How....how do you know all that?" He breathes out, his voice coated in disbelief.

"I had....have a thing for them," I say with a laugh.

"Are you okay? I'd offer to drive but I don't know where you live...or how to drive one," I tease with a smile when he just stands there looking at me.

My words seem to snap him out of his stupor. He climbs onto the bike and I follow, wrapping my arms around his torso. He takes off once I'm comfortable and I squeal excitedly.

Ride on a superbike. Check.
