If you are going to make the MC choose between the Map and the Cloak, then the MC should definitely get the cloak! A Deathly Hallow > a map he can eventually learn how to make! Plus, he can use the cloak to sneak around and continue his studies in the Restricted section of the Hogwarts library!

You really need to move on with the family issues, asap, its killing the novel, or at least whatever interest it built in the first few chapters. We dont read for mental issues and bad drama.
