how does he know that mankey has red potential ? Didn't you say they can only check their potential after catching them .

In the chapter MC first entered Viridian Forest he fought a group of Caterpie and it was clearly stated just before the fight that he can't learn potential of a pokemon without catching it. In this chapter however MC learns potential of all Mankey and both Fearow through a simple scan with Pokedex. One of those needs to get changed for consistency's sake, although before deciding which to change I would first check if that's touched upon later and if so then which of those two informations is supported.
