An anti-hero usually has good intentions and positive morals, but also has negative traits, like Batman. The villain is just an asshole, the reader should hate him.

Everyone around him is a tool for MC, if you notice any sentiment for something, it's just Gale's nostalgia for the good times. However, he appreciates people with his same kind of thinking, like the members of the Red Lotus. He considers Zaheer as an equal. Acting like a good friend doesn't necessarily mean he truly cares about them. In one of the chapters, he has fun with Korra at the festival that takes place every year in the South, but it's all a façade. Everything has a purpose, read the story and draw your own conclusions.
