I struggle with this because Sophie thought she was a widow and Karenina is an unwed daughter of a noble. There’s a lot of shame associated with that and it’s very public. Sophie was able to marry well, and she was lucky in that regard but Karenina is effectively bringing shame to the family. I just don’t think it’s fair for him to compare them because they are very different people with different wants, needs, and emotions. This is obviously putting aside Karenina’s machinations, which are BS, but Nicholas doesn’t know that.
This made Nicholas feel more gratitude and admiration swell in his heart for Sophie. She was such a strong woman and she didn't give up, no matter what the circumstances were. - AriannaSunrise1yrCommented
