if I were to give a suggestion try reading "trancended as lord buggy" maybe you can get some ideas from there. 20+ years gap to the canon is a long bridge to cross. that novel took 400 chapters to get to the canon point of the story.

About the creator's thought I'll just say that take your time with the story. many writers try to rush the story to get to the canon point of the story only ending up digging a pit for themselves. maybe add some day to day "family" interactions sometimes.
