Its for content, really this is the most logical reason in any one peice fanfiction that someone joined luffys crew, because it would work better to follow luffy and get the one peice fans to watch than to just go off randomly and might not get any people or miss the action.

Well the vemon sakes for a snake is normally in the head around the eye area so as long as you take off the head of the snake the rest of the body is good.

You don't need to know the anatomy of a snake if you are a survival expert. You just need to know not to get bit by it and to cut off the head and gut it before eating it.
