The story captures a realistic depiction of the fragile lives of the adolescence in Fort McMurray, a highly controversial oil sands town in northern Canada. Each chapter is rich in content, compact in plot, and brought to life by the unique and nuanced prose describing life, learning, and society. UHS is inspiring in tone and in content, but at the same time, it is a book that does not romanticize the severity of prejudice and discrimination. Under Her Skin gives a distorted view of the role of automation in the lives of the “selfie generation” by revealing how addiction and privacy breaches are features, not bugs, of technologies. The story brings readers into the life of a teenager at her most impuissant state, battling with racism and bullying, and reflects how the presence of the cellphone and social media has amplified and heightened racial tensions in the United States. The novel advocates for one striking and impactful message: The social cancer is rooted not in our differences in skin color, but in our refusal to embrace and understand these shades of difference. At some point in our lives, we have all resented living in our own skin, resented having to carry the weight of being the only. Whether it’s confused high schoolers or teenagers going through identity-crises or racism, or just anybody with dark thoughts or feelings of loneliness, they will undoubtably find a part of themselves within these pages. In a nutshell, I highly recommend this novel to any teenager who is struggling with self-love or passionate about deep topics surrounding identity, culture, and racism. This book will take you deep into the depths of your soul and change the way you see the world forever.
the story is wonderfully written and i could sense that the author wants to convey deep emotions towards her readers. personally i loved the story and so far my only comment is that the narration is kind of confusing at the start and the first chapter is very important to attract possible collections and subs. so far a good read. good job author!
