Fountain stop, girl meets surgeon under the moonlight

" What's the patient name?" Dr Evans asked

One of the students jumped to answer the question," I do not know, we were not given the details because we were told to move to the side when the ambulances arrived." She said while batting her eyelashes and playing with her hair. To this, most of us rolled our eyes.

" Then you all failed the test." Dr Evans said with a poker face

* murmurs*

One student raised his hand and bravely asked, " But why, doctor? We did not do anything wrong. We simply followed instructions as we were told to stand aside which we did." He said

" Oh? Is that so?" Dr Evans said

" Yes, I believe that we did not do anything wrong, we followed their clear instructions." The student answered.

" If I told you to take 1000mg of painkillers and give it to one of the patients would you do it without question because that would be my clear instructions as well." He said to the student.

" Uhmm, that would be harmful to the patient doctor." He mumbled while he played with the buttons of his coat. He was nervous

" That is not the point, the point here is that I gave you instructions that you should follow without question just like the ones you followed." Dr Evans said while folding his arms. how intimidating!

" But there is a difference doctor." another student chimed in

" There is?" Dr Evans asked

" Yes, the first instructions we followed meant no harm to anyone so we could do that but your instructions are most likely going to result in a patient's suffering." The second student explained.

" Yes...you are right." Dr Evans said to the student but then added, " and you are wrong. Does anyone know why?" He asked

He looked around and his eyes landed on me and he said, " anyone? anyone at all?" He asked again while looking straight at me and I promise I saw a smirk on his face for a brief second and just then he said, " You there with the beige scrubs care to give us an answer?"

All the students turned to the one student wearing beige scrubs.

That was me! He was referring to me! Why does he keep targeting me?

" Ahem, We harmed ourselves doctor because we missed a learning opportunity, well that is how I saw it when we stepped aside when the patients arrived," I answered while avoiding his gaze

" Oh, that is interesting. That is a very interesting answer." He said, was I wrong?

" The lady in beige scrubs is correct. You harmed yourselves and more so your future patients because this is the only place you can get to learn the dos and don'ts but you let that chance slip away. If your current station does not work join another because in the end you are not doing anyone a favor but you and not knowing your patient's name is the worst possible mistake you can commit." He said and his words were well received because all the confident students looked ashamed over proudly stating that we simply followed instructions. His words stung.

" To rectify your mistakes, divide into smaller groups and join the others and learn something." He added. The other students jumped at the opportunity and quickly looked for groups to join. I was about to follow suit when I was called to stay behind.

" Student in beige scrubs, we are not done seeing this patient. Since you called me she is your responsibility." Dr Evans said to me and I stayed behind looking sadly at the disappearing shadows of my classmates as they went to find other exciting cases while I was stuck here.

" I have a name you know doctor and I believe you know it." I snapped in a hushed tone at him. He laughed, like a hearty laugh

" Okay then, Dr Falls did you want to leave your patient halfway through, I am worried about your future patients." He said

" My future patients will be fine, they will be in good hands you do not have to worry about them," I said while huffing and buffing my cheeks. Okay, I looked silly, like really silly.

" Oh, you do not even know your first patient's name." He said

" Well, that is different," I said

" How so? You must make the effort to find out everything about the person you are treating, they have lives outside of this hospital." He said and I understood immediately why he was the youngest surgeon in the country. well, that was until he added, " Unlike you."

" What is that supposed to mean doctor?" I asked him

" It means exactly that, you do not have a life or do you, tell me do you even go clubbing let alone friends to go with?" He said. The audacity!

" I do not see how is that relevant doctor, are we not supposed to be monitoring the child?" I asked changing the topic.

He laughed and said," I will take that as a no. Though I am a little relieved to know that because an infant like you shouldn't be allowed to go clubbing let alone date." He said and walked away towards the reception. I stood there in a daze because what just happened?!

Infant? Me? He was calling me an infant?

" Dr Falls? Is this your patient?" a nurse asked me, bringing me back to reality.

" Uh yes, I mean no. I am still a student." I answered

" Oh great, then it is you. Her name is Leah and she is 4 years old. Dr Evans told me to give you her details and I will be monitoring her." She said

" Thank you so much, but why are you monitoring her? " I asked her

" Because Dr Evans said that you should me him by the reception." She said with a bright beautiful smile that made me think that she is extremely nice. But why should I go to a person who just now called me an infant?! No way am I doing that.

After thanking the nurse I walked away in the opposite direction to the one Dr Evans was supposedly waiting for me.

I went outside to the fountain near the enterance. I sat there for quite a while and lost track of time.

" Dr Falls, this is not the time to be playing games. I called you to come with me to review a patient. Why did you leave?" Dr Evans asked startling me. His tone was not neutral, it was more like anger? Is he angry because I did not pitch earlier? Well, he called me an infant!

I stood up and said " I am sorry doctor, Is there anything you needed me to do for you?" I asked.

slience.

This was uncomfortable.

" Why are you outside, do you not care about your safety?" He finally asked

" I do, but hospitals are generally safe, that is why I was not overly concerned." I answered

" Well next time you should be." Dr Evans said

" I am sorry for leaving after you called me doctor, I did not know we were going to see another patient." I said

" You owe me." He said

" Pardon? Why?" I asked

" I cleared your patients for you while putting mine aside so I did you a favor and now you owe me. And I have very expensive taste." He said grinning showing his dimples, I could see them thanks to the moonlight. He is handsome. Oops, caught myself saying nonsense.

" You should go back inside if you are cold." He said cutting off my thoughts, but then he gave me his coat and he was left with his black hoodie.

" What do you want this too?" He asked with a mischievous grin pointing at the hoodie i was unconciously staring at. I immediately looked away, blushing. He laughed.

How can a person switch from blazing anger to a grin like that?
