" What do you mean the child is in respiratory distress?!" exclaimed the paeds doctor I was assigned to.

" who are you?" he asked

" Alyssa Falls." I answered though I am not certain as to why my name would be relevant when a baby was struggling to breathe.

" Falls...Falls?Falls, from which Institute or country?" he asked again

" doctor, may I answer those questions after the child has been helped?" I asked anxiously and one of the military students snickered.

" miss Harley, please tell your fellow student over there that there are many reasons why she would not hear any breathing sounds in a baby. No, in fact tell her just one reason why. " the paeds doctor said

" Gladly doctor." She responded to the doctor then turned to me." maybe your technique was wrong. " she stated as though as was certain that I did something wrong while I was assessing the child

" No, no miss Harley. You are being too nice. Be blunt like this. Your technique was wrong because I checked and nothing was wrong with the child. " the doctor said and then added, " now as you can see miss Alyssa, we are busy trying to save a patient who's in dire need of saving so if you may please. " He said rudely then turned away to continue with what he was busy with. I left the ward and rushed to find anyone who could help, I was not about to witness another death here.

I looked and looked but no one was available and I was shooed away multiple times. There was no one to help the child, what would I say to her father?

Dejected, I stood in the hall way thinking of a way out, if there was one. I can not act on my own without permission from the doctor I was assigned to but I can not let the child die especially after we discovered the problem. What should I do?

" Are you okay?" a deep melodious voice woke me up from my thoughts and I looked at him and nodded my head. I was fine but my patient was not.

" why are you just standing there? It's busy inside, go back." Dr Evans said as he walked passed me seemingly in a rush as well.

"doctor wait." I said as I rushed after him

" I do not have the time of day to talk to you at the moment." he said then paused as though realizing how rude he was being then added softly, " not now, okay?" then began to walk away again

" but you did not hear what I have to say." I stated

"and I am saying I will later not now." he answered

"so you going to dismiss me like all the others did? I would not have to talk to you doctor taking up your precious time if it wasn't for a patient but okay, I understand." I said suddenly letting all the anger out. He stopped in his tracks but I didn't acknowledge this and walked past him.

*gasp*

Dr Evans pushed me towards the wall and used his own hand to protect my head from bumping against the wall and the other block my way.

" I stopped for you and you decided to walk away. I don't have the time..." he paused "Just tell me what happened." he said sighing

Ba dum ba dum ba dum. My heart was racing, I tried to move but I couldn't get free.

He was too close and looking straight at me, the height difference did not help but I did not care, I looked at him and bravely said, " one of the patients from the scene is a paeds patient who I believe is not breathing properly." I said, then added "there were no air entry sounds when I listened to her chest."

He released me and said "lead the way." and I did, completely forgetting what had just transpired.

We rushed to the ED and the patient was still there with his daughter but he didn't look so good as well.

*Mumurs*

Giggles could be heard from afar and we knew that his fan girls where here and this was not the time because he ignored them and proceeded to do his job.

"why is this man here?" Dr Evans asked

"he is the girl's father." one of the students answered

"that does not answer my question." the doctor stated as he looked around and said "Aidan take his blood and do a blood gas immediately."

"yes doctor" Aidan replied professionally. So unlike him

"No, I want to stay with my child. She is not feeling well doctor please help her." the father said

"sir, you are equally a patient as she is and if we do not find what is wrong with you, you might as well be leaving her for the rest of her life. Do not be stubborn and let the student doctor do his job. I will see you immediately after I help your daughter. " Dr Evans said to the poor father. He scared him because his eyes popped out and then he started sobbing again.

" come on let's go. " Aidan encouraged the father

" nurse Hilda, please prepare an oxygen mask, a line and intubation trolley please." dr Evans said to a nurse who was passing by.

"lend me your stethoscope." he said to me and I handed the stethoscope to him. He took only a few seconds to listen. "Follow me" he said and we (all the students followed)

" Nurse Hilda, are you ready?" Dr Evans asked

"yes, ready when you are doctor." Nurse Hilda replied.

" Okay please put the oxygen mask on her and I will attempt an arterial line to get her medication to open up her airway if this fails we are intubating her." Dr Evans said then proceeded to work on the child.

His hands were moving fast but his movements were mesmerizing, he did everything elegantly like he was a master with thousands of years and experience under his belt.

As he worked, a crowd suddenly formed because of his magnetic charisma while he performed a procedure to save the child's life. He was busy for 10 minutes straight then...

The baby smiled.

She was no longer restless and started to play with the stethoscope around the doctor's neck. She was fine!

" we do not have to intubate anymore right?" the nurse asked

"there is no need. Thank you for your trouble." Dr Evans politely replied.

" Wow, as expected of the youngest surgeon. His brilliance is beyond compare." one person stated

" yeah that was magical." another added

" more like a miracle" said another

"do not exaggerate please. Anyone would have done the same thing." one scoffed I opposition, then added, " he did not do anything special."

"huh? Do you even know what the doctor just did? Not even a single doctor in the ED and paeds departments combined can do the ashlov procedure on a child! There was a 98 percent chance of things going south but not only did they not, we even witnessed a moment that will go down in history. " the first medical officer said

" that is impossible the ashlov is a technique used only in adults with severe breathing problems in an emergency setting. It has never been proposed for use in children because the trials done failed to secure a perfect balance between the doses adequate for a baby and the level of toxicity the baby could experience as a side effect. " said the medical officer who initially said that what Dr Evans did was not a miraculous feat.

" well then you just witnessed the impossible. " the first medical officer replied with a victory laugh.

I, along with the other students, was completely confused, ashlov? When did he do that? And how did the medical officers see the procedure so well as to say what it was?

In any case, he saved a life and that counts the most to me.
