Chapter 2 - A New Job

Chapter 2: A New Job

The next morning, Alyssa was woken up by an argument.

Georgie was pulling on one side of a blue teddy bear, and Charlie was pulling on the other side.

"Is mine!" Georgie whined, and Alyssa opened her eyes. The three girls and Peter were all still asleep in the bed with her.

"No mine!" Charlie shouted back, and pulled as hard as he could. When Alyssa pushed her way out of the bed and stood up, the teddy bear tore in half, sending both toddlers flying backwards. They landed on their bottoms and Charlie immediately wanted to cry.

The teddy bear's stuffing was all over the floor, and Alyssa sighed. She would have to clean it all before breakfast, because Miss Rose wasn't there yet.

"What is going on here?" Alyssa asked as she went to stand between them. "Are you fighting?"

Instantly, Charlie and Georgie blushed and looked away guiltily.

"No, Mommy, we are playing."

"Hmm…" Alyssa frowned and leaned down to pick up the pieces of the bear. "It looks like you broke this toy?"

"Sorry, Mommy". Charlie said sheepishly, and came towards her to hug her leg. Georgie didn't apologize but he looked  sad about the whole situation.

"Don't let it happen again, okay!"

Alyssa started picking up all of the stuffing, with Charlie still attached to her leg. "It is very naughty to break your toys."

"Yes, Mommy." Charlie answered and let go of her leg. "I won't again."

Alyssa stared at the group that was still asleep on the bed. When they woke up, the house would become a world of chaos. She needed to grab her chance to get ready and prepare breakfast for everyone. Hopefully, Charlie and Georgie wouldn't continue getting into trouble while she did that.

At least Miss Rose would be coming in soon and then Alyssa could focus on herself.

She had just moved back to Riverton with all of her children, because it had much better opportunities than the small town they had lived in for two years.

There, she worked as a cashier for a small store, and used her inheritance from her grandmother to look after her family. But that money was almost gone, and her job just didn't cover it. With a college degree and a little bit of experience under her belt, Alyssa knew the city was her best bet.

She had been spending the week looking for a job. She had sent out at least twenty resumes, but no-one has called her back yet and that was starting to make her worried. If she couldn't find a job, she didn't know how she was going to pay for everything that her children needed.

Georgie and Charlie waddled after Alyssa as she walked out of the room and went towards the kitchen to get started with breakfast. They weren't squabbling anymore but they were too quiet. It made Alyssa think that they are up to something again.

She just needed her morning coffee, then she would get going for job hunting. Once the others woke up, she would be running all day. She had to admit that she looked forward to be able to work again, even if she would miss her children very much while she was away.

"Mommy  I hungry!" Georgie exclaimed behind her as Alyssa switched on the kettle.

"I know, sweetie, just be patient." Alyssa answered, before she heard a knock at the front door. Miss Rose was early for her shift.

Alyssa walked over to open the door as relief washed over her. If miss Rose could sort out breakfast, then she could start job- hunting early.

"Morning! You are early." She smiled as Miss Rose headed past her into the house. "I mean, I appreciate it but I didn't expect you to be here before eight."

Miss Rose picked Georgie up as he reached for her in greeting. Charlie held onto her leg yelling that he want to be lifted too. His shouta woke up the rest of the children and Alyssa soon heard tumbling out of the bed.

The four of them walked to the living room rubbing their sleepy eyes and pouting seriously.

Mornings are always easier for Georgie and Charlie but not for the rest of them.

All six of them started complaining that they are hungry.

"I will make breakfast." Miss Rose said above all of the noise. "You can get them dressed." She said to Alyssa.

"That's a good idea." Alyssa laughed, "come on everyone!"

Sex pairs of feet followed her to the bedroom and lined up in front of the closest.

"Me!" Georgie shouted, standing at the very front. Alyssa gather his clothes together and pointed to the bed. He hopped up happily, waiting to get dressed.

As Alyssa started pulling of his pajamas, Georgie began to grin and kicked his little feet naughtily.

"Georgie, you have to stay still!" Alyssa insisted but he didn't listen. She had to struggle with him for another few minutes before her was naked. Then he decided to run away, because he didn't want to get dressed.

"Georgie!" Alyssa called after him. Before she could chase him, her phone began to ring. She answered, wondering who it could be. "Alyssa Jackson, good morning." The person on the phone responded.

"This is Jane Godwin, from the RT Television Station, we received your application and we would like you to be here by eight o'clock".

"Oh, uh, yes, of course!" Alyssa stumbled over her words, completely surprised. It was already almost half past seven, so she would need hurry if she wanted to get there on time. "I will be there!"

"Good." Jane answered, and the phone clicked as she ended the call. Alyssa stared at it for a moment in disbelief. Then, she shouted to Miss Rose in the kitchen. "I have got a job interview. I need to go , please handle them!"

"That's great!" Miss Rose replied. "Don't worry, I have got this under control."

The other five kids had started getting restless and they were trying to get naked so that they could run around with Georgie. Alyssa wasn't sure if Miss Rose could really get them back under control in this situation. But that didn't matter. Alyssa had to get to the station.

She quickly got dressed in a neat outfit, pairing a black pencil skirt with a blouse and a flat pumps so that she could move as fast as possible. The GPS on her cell phone confirmed that she would need at least twenty minutes to get there.

Alyssa checked the clock on her cell phone once she was ready to go. Twenty-two minutes until eight o'clock. She needed to hurry.

Charlie grabbed onto her leg just as she was about to go out to door. "Mommy, don't go."

"Sweetheart, mommy will be home soon." Alyssa leaned down to kiss him on his forehead. "Stay with Miss Rose. I will be back before you know it."

She had to physically pulled him of her and he looked truly sad as she left and closed the door behind her.

She had to remind herself that she was doing this for them as her heart sank.

Alyssa ran to the station and up to the reception just a minute after eight.

"I am looking for Jane Godwin." She said to the receptionist, who pointed down the hallway.

"Second door to the right."

"Thank you." Alyssa stormed down the hallway and knocked on the door.

"You are late." The lady behind the desk on the other side announced.

"They are waiting for you in the parking area."

Alyssa paused, uncertain of how to respond. Was this a job interview, or have they just decided to hire her already? It didn't seem to be how job application usually went.

"Why are you still standing here?" Jane raised her eyebrows at Alyssa.

"Get moving!"
