Old man Vee's last moments

"Old man Vee…old man Vee was…"

Bretrato calmed himself before narrating what had transpired to the village head.

Turned out that just two days after the village head and left for the capital with Alex, old man Vee had been on patrol when three beasts attacked the village from behind. Well, not actually attack as they had not hurt anyone when they were spotted. The three beasts were seen approaching the village from behind and at that time, some of the villagers were working in the field and were not present. A kid had sighted the three beasts immediately after they entered the open space that was cleared up by the villagers to distance the village from the forest and had called for help.

Old man Vee had upheld his words to keep the village safe until the village head returned and despite being weak in magic and not being so used to combat, old man Vee had faced great difficulty with just driving the three beasts back.

One had to know that beasts were different from magic beasts as even the lowest class of magic beasts would have easily wiped out the village, beasts were just ordinary animals with abnormal features. Still, they were not something to be toyed with as it would usually take a bunch of ordinary people just to hunt down one beast.

Only elite magic apprentice-ranked mages could defeat a beast on their own and even that mage would face issues if faced with more than one beast.

Old man Vee had fought tirelessly, dealing lightning spells after spells at the three beasts but sadly, he was no elite mage and his casting speed was slow which gave the beasts the chance to dodge most of his spells.

Luckily, old man Vee managed to drive the beasts back after a long fight. The old man was completely worn out after the beasts retreated and even looked like he might die at any moment, the villagers had to carry him back to his house.

That day, old man Vee had advised the villagers not to go to the field in the coming days while he restored his mama, he was worried that the beasts would come back.

All the villagers agreed without raising a single complaint, they had seen how the old man risked his life just to fight those three beasts, they would all be dead without him so the least that they could do since they could not assist him in the fight was to follow his orders.

Unfortunately for them, it turned out that those three beasts were the type that held grudges. The three idiots came back the next day with three more of their kind, it looked like they had called their entire family to seek revenge.

Old man Vee who had yet to fully recover was once again pitched against six beasts, one could already foresee the outcome of the fight. After all, old man Vee at his peak had been unable to kill three of these beasts, now he had to face six when he was still exhausted.

The villagers were already saying their prayers and prepared to assist old man Vee and fight to the death alongside old man Vee, hoping to at least kill these beasts at the end and give their kids a chance to live on.

But what happened next had stunned everyone, even Bretrato could not believe his eyes that the person he was seeing was the same old man who would always quarrel with him.

Old man Vee had suddenly exploded with a terrifying energy that did not resemble that of a magic apprentice at all, the energy was so strong that it shattered the ground and blew away everything that was around the old man.

The villagers had watched as old man Vee was covered in purple lightning, the sky had suddenly turned dark and thunderclaps exploded within the clouds. Old man Vee looked like a lightning God who had descended from the immortal world in anger.

Huge and terrifying lightning had struck from the sky and blasted the six beasts to death, what was left of them were scorched, smoking lifeless bodies after the lightning damage. As for old man Vee, they found him lying motionless in the pit that his sudden outburst had caused; he was already dead.

The villagers had made a grave at the back of the village and laid the honorable old mage to rest, they constructed a grand tombstone for him as well.

They had then decided to remain indoors until the village head returned, as it was a way of paying respect to the deceased mage and also from fear of more beasts coming to the village.

The village head stood frozen in place for a long time after he was told what had happened while he was away, his mind blank and full at the same time.

No one knew what he was thinking for the few minutes that he stood there but a pained smile suddenly formed on his face.

"So that's how it is, could you take me to his grave?" The village head asked politely and was led to the back of the village where a grave and a tombstone cut from stone could be seen, this was considered grand to the villagers and even the village head appreciated it.

The village head walked up to the grave and squatted beside it.

"Thanks, old friend, for keeping your promise. The journey was a success and Alex got into the academy easily, this was all thanks to your advice. I can not imagine why you acted weak and stayed with us for these past years but thank you for protecting us, for protecting them"

The village head muttered in a low tone as he reported details of the journey to the old man in the grave, his actions caused most of the villagers to sigh in grief while others were already crying.

Even the old storyteller, Bretrato, had a gloomy look on his face. He was one of the people whom the old man had fought to death for, Bretrato wished that he had argued less with old man Vee while he was alive.
