Chapter 5.5: Ignorance

Chapter 5.5: Ignorance

At Konoha Hospital.

Shin sat shirtless on the hospital bed as a middle-aged male doctor carefully reviewed some documents in his hand. The doctor then gently pressed on the frightening scar across Shin's chest and abdomen.

The scar was caused by a blade piercing through his body, which was the reason for Shin's death before his soul transmigrated. At the time, Nohara Rin had performed emergency treatment. Now the wound had healed over, with only a slight itching and stinging sensation when the doctor touched it.

"Your body is recovering normally. Just come in for regular check-ups," the doctor instructed. "We expect you'll be fully healed in about a week. During this time, avoid any strenuous activities or ninja training. Be careful not to scrub the wound too hard when bathing."

"Understood," Shin nodded.

The middle-aged doctor then picked up another document. "Your physical exam results are all normal, except your vision has decreased somewhat... though that's not really an issue for you, is it?"

He knew the person before him was from the Hyuga clan, so naturally there was no comparison between his current vision and when he previously had the Byakugan.

"You can go home now. If you have any problems or discomfort, come to the hospital right away for a check-up."

"Thank you, doctor," Shin nodded in gratitude, then took his report and left the examination room.

The hospital environment was far from quiet, rather chaotic and noisy. Due to the ongoing war, most medical ninja had been sent to the frontlines, leaving the hospital short-staffed. Meanwhile, wounded were constantly being sent back to the village from the front.

In the hallways, one could see people with bandages and casts hobbling by, as well as medical staff hurrying about their busy work.

This scene made Shin feel somewhat melancholy. As he was about to leave the hospital, he suddenly collided with someone rushing around a corner.

"Oh!"

A cry of surprise, and papers scattered across the floor.

"Hey, watch where you're going!"

Before Shin could see who it was, he heard a petulant voice.

A purple-haired little girl sat crouched on the ground, looking even younger than Shin's current age. She seemed vaguely familiar...

She glared at Shin angrily: "You jerk, do you know who I am?! If I'm late delivering these to Lord Orochimaru because of you, can you take responsibility?!"

With that accusation, plus her mention of Orochimaru, Shin immediately realized who she was.

As she bent down to gather the scattered papers, she looked up intending to scold the person who bumped into her. But she suddenly saw Shin leaning against the wall with one hand, the other clutching his chest in apparent pain.

Anko was startled and instinctively stepped back. "What... what are you doing? What's wrong?"

Shin spoke through gritted teeth: "My chest really hurts. You bumped into me... ow~"

Anko looked skeptical: "Stop pretending, how could a little bump hurt that much?"

Shin shakily handed over his medical report. Anko took it and read it carefully, seeing the record of Shin's serious unhealed injuries. She immediately panicked.

She stood there at a loss, wanting to approach Shin but afraid to touch him: "Are... are you okay? Does it hurt a lot?"

"Doctor! Doctor!"

She called out frantically, finally summoning a female medical staff member.

"What's wrong?" The staff member went to examine Shin as Anko hurriedly handed over his medical report.

Anko explained anxiously: "I just... accidentally bumped into him. I didn't know he was injured. I didn't mean to, I really didn't mean to..."

The female medical staff looked at the report, then glanced at Shin and Anko.

Seeing this, Shin let out a breath and said: "It's much better now, doesn't hurt much anymore."

She calmly handed the report back, saying: "The hospital staff are all very busy. Please don't let this happen again."

Shin said: "Sorry for the trouble."

Little Anko, not catching the meaning behind those words, thought she was being scolded and kept bowing and saying "Yes, yes."

After the medical staff left, Shin and Anko remained.

Anko asked cautiously: "Are... are you okay now?"

Shin glanced at her and said: "No."

Anko stood there with her head lowered, clutching the stack of documents tightly in front of her.

She asked hesitantly: "Then what do you want... I, I don't have any money!"

Shin found it amusing, but also felt he was being a bit too mischievous.

"Can you afford to treat me to a meal?" he asked.

"Huh?" Anko was confused.

"Treat me to a meal to make amends."

Anko understood now. She was about to agree, but then couldn't help wondering if this guy was a big eater who wanted to bankrupt her. What if her allowance wasn't enough?

After pondering for a moment, she nodded: "Okay... but I need to deliver these things to Lord Orochimaru first. Don't worry, I won't back out! Or you could come with me..."

Shin said: "That's fine, I trust you. I'll wait for you at Yakiniku Q on West Street."

Barbecue, huh...

Anko's face scrunched up in distress. This guy really was going to eat up all her money!

"Alright, wait for me for half an hour."

The two parted ways at the hospital entrance. Shin watched her small figure running off, somewhat surprised that Orochimaru was actually in Konoha now. He had thought Orochimaru would be at the frontlines. His original body's memories of Orochimaru were also very limited, mostly hearsay.

He leisurely made his way to the agreed location and sat down in the barbecue restaurant.

After about half an hour, he saw a small figure at the entrance looking around.

Anko was currently cursing Shin in her mind. After delivering the items to Orochimaru, she was afraid her allowance wouldn't be enough, so she asked Orochimaru for some money.

But when Orochimaru handed her his wallet, she discovered that even Lord Orochimaru didn't have much money. There were only a few bills in the wallet, and she didn't have the heart to take more.

This jerk not only embarrassed her, but was also taking Lord Orochimaru's money. How despicable!

Seeing Shin looking at her from his seat inside, Anko still put away her angry feelings, not wanting it to show on her face.

She walked over and tiptoed to sit across from Shin, asking: "What was your name again? Shin something?"

Earlier when looking at the medical report, she had only glanced at the name without paying attention.

"Hyuga Shin."

"Oh, Hyuga Shin. I'm Mitarashi... Hyuga?" Anko nodded, about to introduce herself when she suddenly stopped mid-sentence.

"You're from the Hyuga clan?" She looked at him in shock, staring at his black eyes.

"Your name is Mitarashi what?" Shin asked instead.

"Oh, Mitarashi Anko..." Anko said, her gaze still fixed on Shin in amazement.

At this point, Shin asked the waiter for a menu and started ordering without asking for Anko's opinion.

After pondering for a while, Anko suddenly said: "I remember now, you're the one Rin saved!"

"You know Rin?"

"Ah, Rin and Kurenai are good friends, so I got to know her through that."

Anko wasn't in the same year as Rin, but two years below her.

Soon, the waiter first brought over some desserts and drinks. Anko's eyes lit up at the sight and she started eating without hesitation.

Since she was paying anyway, might as well eat a lot!

When the barbecue Shin ordered was brought over, he finally picked up his chopsticks and started placing meat on the grill piece by piece.

Anko wanted to help, but her technique was poor. She just grabbed meat and placed it randomly on the grill without paying attention.

Shin couldn't help but tap Anko's chopsticks with his own: "Don't make a mess, just wait to eat."

Anko pouted, silently cursing this jerk for being so bossy even though she was paying.

She picked up another piece of cake and shoved it in her mouth, chewing forcefully.

But when Shin placed a piece of well-grilled meat on her plate and she tasted it, her annoyance instantly vanished.

"You're pretty good at this," Anko said while picking up more grilled meat with her chopsticks.

The other person was just a little girl, and Shin didn't really want to chat idly with her, but he had no choice at the moment.

After eating a few pieces of meat, Anko couldn't contain her curiosity anymore and asked bluntly: "I heard your eyes are from your dead teammate?"

Shin glanced at her, his expression calm: "Mm."

"I have a friend in a similar situation, but he only replaced one eye."

"Hatake Kakashi?"

"You know him?"

"The genius jonin, who in the village doesn't know him."

Anko nodded at this. Kakashi's reputation in the village was indeed quite well-known.

She then asked: "So how does your current eyes feel different from your previous Byakugan?"

Shin paused in his meat-grilling and looked at her: "Of course they're different. I used to have the Byakugan, which could see things kilometers away, see through any obstacle, clearly see a person's chakra network and flow. Now I just have normal eyes that can't see anything special."

Hearing this, Anko couldn't help saying: "That's so pitiful."

Shin said calmly: "It's only temporary. I'll get my Byakugan back soon."

Anko was surprised: "Eh?"

Shin continued: "Our Hyuga clan has preserved many eyes from our ancestors. These eyes are kept intact so that when a Hyuga clan member's eyes are injured, we can replace them with new Byakugan. The clan has already arranged an eye transplant surgery for me. I'll have the Byakugan again very soon."

"That's possible?" Anko didn't realize why Shin was telling her all this, but she found it fascinating.

"Since I could change from Byakugan to normal eyes, of course I can change back to Byakugan," Shin said. "Moreover, those preserved eyes are from some very powerful ancestors, including Byakugan from past generations of the main family."

Anko listened in a daze, then asked: "Whose Byakugan are you getting?"

Hearing this, Shin's eyes flickered slightly. Looking at Anko's attentive face, he said slowly: "I don't know. The place where the Byakugan are kept is a restricted area in our clan. The key is held by our clan's jonin, Hyuga Nino. Without the clan head's orders, no one is allowed to enter."

Anko couldn't help but ask further: "Then doesn't that mean you..."

Shin tapped her forehead lightly with the back of his chopsticks: "Why so many questions? Just eat your barbecue."

Anko pouted and rubbed her head, then went back to eating. Shin only ate a few pieces, giving the rest to Anko.

"Stop giving me more, I'm stuffed."

"You're paying, so eat more."

"...Alright then, I'll eat a bit more."
