*Rain*
On top of the pile of corpses he knelt, he looked ahead and saw a trully horrid sight. Corpses of men, women and children of all age groups either clad in armour or in informal attire scattered in a seemingly unending plain and he looked at this sea of corpses and thought
"Why did it turn out this way."
The great kingdom of Camelot, a nation that was founded by the legendary knight 'sir Arthur Pendragon' the man who pulled out the great Excalibur from the stone and received the blessings of the lady of the lake. This man built the city alongside the other knights of the round table who served as it's guardian deities. All of this man's accomplishments bred envy and hatred in the hearts of the empires' rulers leading to war between the two factions and the end result.....
The sole survivor of the great war sat, reminiscing the events leading up to the war itself and after deep thought, he realised that he couldn't find any meaning in the entire thing. He and all his men fought with all their might and managed to match with the empires' forces even with their superior numbers, but they couldn't save the town or themselves.
"They say that death on the battlefield is a knights greatest wish.... so was this really what they all wanted. To die meaningless deaths like this."
"Don't be silly Arthur, this all happened because of your incompetence and nothing else."
And just like that 10 days passed
Day 11
he stood in a field of tombs and said
"finally finished giving all of them a proper burial"
he looked at one of the numerous tombs and saw the civilian mark he put on the grave stone to distinguish between them and the warriors who all died and thought to himself
'this person probably had dreams he wanted to fulfill.... and because of me.......'
he bowed his head for some time before turning away from the tomb.
Day 72
"By tomorrow, I would have finished all the spare food supplies I found. Gotta start thinking of a new food source."
Day 94
*stomach rumbles*
"need...food"
'maybe i should just digg out some people.....and....'
'No!, if I did that I couldn't live with myself anymore'
Day 109
*chewing*
'tch....to think my resolve was this weak....how did someone like me end up as king anyway.'
The self resentment and guilt began to eat away at him.
Day137
'winter is already here?'
'better start preparing'
Day 176
'my body is already deteriorating?'
'to think I was always this weak and fragile'
Day 194
'i can barely even walk, I am suffering from malnutrition since I only ever ate corpses'
Day 200
'A....am..I...dying'
'i guess this is my limit'
*cough*
"lancelot, guys, I will soon join you".
'...'
'I was the one responsible for all this loss and blood shed......am I really allowed to die a normal death and just go and join them, is it really okay for me to just return to them as if nothing happened........no, am running away from my responsibilities again'.
Day 204
*coughs*
*coughs*
'this is it'
'I am sorry you all had such a useless ruler, who couldn'teven atone properly'
'if I was given just one more chance to.....I swear I will make it up to you'
'just one more....................
'hmm what is this, I thought for sure I died......................
he opened his eyes and was overwhelmed by the sight he saw next. He lay in an enchanting expanse of space covered all around with golden clouds and in front of him was an even more bewildering sight as an unending trail of golden pathway stood not supported by any beams of any sort stood, the trail itself was curving. It was narrow and at the same time wide.....no, it couldn't be described by human understanding of space. The magnificent sight was truly breathtaking.
'are you the next challenger'.
"...?!"
he heard a voice.
The voice seemed to emanate from all corners of the space as well as from within him. Confused by this phenomenon he staggered
"w-who?!".
The voice spoke again
'I am the path to salvation'
"the path....to salvation?!".
'that is correct. I am the great deity who gives fallen heroes like yourself with regrets from their past life a second chance'.
"A second chance".
'Yes, a second chance. To atone for your past failures by returning to said past and redoing it.
in other words '"REGRESSION"'.
"........!!"
He was silent for some time before replying
"i-is this for real?!"
'of course but naturally it doesn't come without a price'
he felt a cold chill run down his spine
there was a brief pause before the voice continued
'you are not the only one who wishes for a second chance through"REGRESSION". But count yourself lucky that you were even given this chance to begin with'
"............!!"
'The path before you is your path to salvation, if you have resolved yourself for the hardships that you will soon face then go forth...........but of course you can always reject this offer and suffer the guilt of so many deaths for the rest of eternity'.
he was silent again then bit down his lower lip before replying
"countless people did because of me.............I am not about to sit still while there is a chance to fix everything".
'good'
he looked up from where he was and straight at the path that stood before him, then he took a step forward and then that one step turned into two, those two steps turned into three and before he knew it he was walking on the bending path, carrying the weight of thousands of lives he thought
'all those peoples' lives are dependent on whether or not I succeed.......there is no room for any error'
he opened his mouth
"I wil prevail".
