A Glitch in the Memory

"June, it's not your fault. None of this is your fault. We should have let you know before. I told Sushi to tell you everything, but she delayed it, thinking that she wanted you to love her, not just as a childhood memory," Chloe stopped him.

"It's true that she loved her mother so much. She was in pain for years, blaming everything on her. She never blamed you for Aunt's death. She was stuck between her mom and you, and I was so happy on the day you came to the marriage. I thought finally she was going to the person she loved all her life," Chloe said.

June just stood there soullessly. He was in deep guilt, thinking that he was the reason for every sadness that Sushi went through all her life. He remembered her suicide attempt, he remembered the accident, the doctor's words still echoing in his mind. He couldn't come out of his thoughts and misery.

Nivi and Huan saw and heard the entire conversation, and felt really bad for him. They couldn't do anything apart from seeing him with a broken heart like that.

He walked towards Sushi's room and looked at her through the glass door. He kept on saying, "Sorry! Sorry!".

When his father-in-law came towards him and consoled him, "Sushi will be okay, don't cry dear. She loved you so much, she loved only you her entire life. She won't leave you alone."

But June still stared at her with teary eyes, hoping she would wake up.

Her father continued talking, "It was my fault too. I shouldn't have kept quiet when my kids did this. I knew that Sushi was coming home every summer. I waited for her the whole year, just for the summer. Maybe my pride stopped me at that time.

But when you came and asked me for Chloe's hand for marriage, I knew that you loved Sushi. That's why I told Sushi to marry you, by lying to her. I thought you kids would figure it out between yourselves. Blame me, June, for my mistake. It was never anything to do with you."

June heard everything and simply walked out of the hospital. He was crying as he drove his car at full speed, visiting all the places where he had been with Sushi in his childhood.

He reminisced about every moment with her, unable to let go of her, yet unable to bring himself to return to the hospital because of his guilt.

He finally ended up at the beach house, sitting there drinking and crying. But Sushi wouldn't wake up. Chloe and the family waited for her to wake up.

When it was almost midnight, June returned to the hospital. Slowly, he opened the door to Sushi's room and sat beside her, holding her hand. Tears streamed down his face as he began to speak, "I'm sorry, Sushi. I'm sorry for everything. You shouldn't have loved me. I'm such a mean person, who couldn't even recognize the person I loved."

Seeing him like that broke Chloe's heart. She couldn't bring herself to go inside, so she waited for him outside.

June placed his hand on her belly, "I'm sorry for our little one," his tears continued to fall. He poured out his heart, "If I had another chance, I would never let you go this time.

I would recognize you immediately, no matter how many Sushi's were in front of me. If there's another life, or if I could go back in time, I wouldn't let anything happen to our little one," he spoke to her throughout the night, unable to stop.

When morning came, everyone at the hospital, waiting for Sushi to wake up. Chloe entered the room and found June hadn't closed his eyes, not even for a moment. He had been talking to Sushi all night, taking care of her.

"June, go and take some rest. I will take care of Sushi," Chloe said.

But June didn't move from his position. Chloe placed her hand on his shoulder, bringing him back from his thoughts. She shook him gently. "June, please!"

Turning to her, June said, "Chloe, why isn't she opening her eyes? I have so many things to tell her. I want to ask her for forgiveness. Can you please tell her to wake up?" His eyes were filled with tears.

Chloe couldn't help but feel more sad for June than for Sushi. As they stood there crying, Sushi moved her finger slightly, and her eyes fluttered.

"Sushi! Sushi! Can you hear me?" June shouted, holding her hand, feeling relieved to see movement from her.

"Chloe, check on her. I will go and get the doctor," June said, quickly running outside to fetch the doctor.

"Doctor! Doctor! Sushi woke up!" he shouted.

Chloe slowly helped Sushi to sit up and adjusted her pillow behind her back.

"Sushi! How are you feeling now? Thank God you woke up. We were worried sick," Chloe and her parents hugged her.

But Sushi seemed confused. She couldn't understand what was happening. Her eyes were still blurry, and her head was hurting. She recognized her family and slowly asked, her lips mumbling, "Where am I, Chloe?"

When June found the doctor, he quickly brought him to the room. Everyone in the family gathered around Sushi's bed. Her parents and Chloe were caressing her, while Huan stood on the other side. When the doctor came in and checked her state.

"How are you feeling now Sushi. You hit your head so hard. What is the last thing you remember?" the doctor questioned Sushi, with June standing behind him, too scared to face Sushi in that state.

"What happened to me? Where am I, Chloe? Where is my mom?" Sushi became nervous and grabbed Chloe's hand upon hearing the doctor's question.

"Sushi, Mom is right here. See!" Chloe pointed towards her mother to show Sushi.

"No, where is my mom? She is in the hospital. I have to see her," Sushi nervously tried to get up from the bed.

Everyone in the room was shocked at her behavior. They couldn't understand what was happening to her. They exchanged shocked looks, and Huan asked, "Doctor, what happened to her?"

Sushi turned towards Huan, "Huan, you are here. Where is Mom?" she questioned.

"Mom?" Huan couldn't answer and looked at the doctor.

Feeling anxious, Sushi got up from the bed. As she was about to fall, June quickly came forward and held her.

"Sushi!" June exclaimed.

She almost fell on him and stood up with the help of his hands. When she slowly looked up and saw June, she was shocked. Stepping back with a disgusted look, she exclaimed, "What is he doing here? What's happening here?" as she looked at Chloe.

June couldn't understand what was happening to her. He tried to hold her, saying, "Sushi, it's me," but she stepped backwards, not even letting him touch her hand.

"Can everyone please stay outside?" the doctor said, sending everyone out.

The nurses helped calm her down and placed her back on the bed. Once she was calm, the doctor asked again, "Sushi, you were in an accident. What is the last thing you remember?"

"I was going to my mom. She was having a heart attack. Huan said it's serious, how did I get into the accident?" she replied, trying to recall her journey back to her mom.

The doctor realized everything and said, "Everything is okay. Please rest for now." They slowly administered a sedative injection to help her sleep.

After a few minutes, the doctor emerged from the room, and everyone awaited anxiously to hear what he had to say. June inquired, "What happened, doctor?"

"She doesn't remember anything about her accident nor the baby. The last thing she remembers is her mother having a heart attack, and Sushi rushing to her," the doctor replied.

Upon hearing this, June lost hope and felt utterly helpless, remaining where he was.

The doctor continued, "The accident damaged her brain, and it might be a temporary situation. We will monitor her closely. For now, please refrain from doing anything that could stress the patient. If you have anything to tell her, it's best to wait and tell her later," the doctor suggested before walking away.

After hearing all this, June simply walked out of the hospital. Chloe followed him and tried to stop him, saying, "June, where are you going? You should be with her. You're the only one who can help her."

"No, Chloe. Didn't you see her? She despises me, she is blaming me for her mother's situation in the hospital. If I go in front of her, it will be too stressful for her. She doesn't remember anything—her mom's death, our marriage and the baby," June replied, tears streaming down his face.

"But the doctor said it might be temporary. She could remember everything soon," Chloe insisted.

"I'll disappear from her life until then. She's already suffered so much because of me. I can't stay and make her suffer more, even in her second chance. It's better this way," June said firmly.
