Chapter 4

It was the next day and around 10 like the day before I heard a knock on the door. I quickly ran to the kitchen and grabbed a knife. I walked back looking through the peephole I see the same men from the day before. I waited till he spoke, "It's Marcus, I know you see me, just open the door."

I waited again and he knocked, "Hey look I don't have all the time in the world alright, that man wants to say something to you. Just come outside."

"Marcus what does he want," I asked stepping out, he sighed handing over a note. "There is a safe with gold in our master bedroom, give that to him." I rolled my eyes after reading the note, "Let that man know that whatever he left in this place is no longer here. The "gold" he speaks of was sold when I was 12." I opened the door to head inside when he said, "Your mother will be here around 12 right, be at the parking lot by 2 am tonight. Oh and don't call the cops, they won't be of much help."

"Fine," I said then closed the door on my way in. I sighed, why is my life like this. I was on the verge of crying slumped by the door. I waited for mother to fall asleep before walking out of our home.

I met Marcus in the parking lot, he was waiting in a car. It was an old busted car, with a lot of rust on its bumper, plus a terrible odor coming from the trunk, nonetheless, I got in and as he drove I asked, "Just to make sure, you aren't kidnapping me so that I can become some prostitute and pay that man's debt, right?"

He laughed and said, "That is a good idea, but nah, I just thought you might want to see him one last time before he is gone." I didn't respond, just looked out the window. He seemed to understand my silence and just drove quietly. We drove for a few minutes before he stopped to put in some gas. The area where he stopped was north of where I lived. There were a group of men by the door holding bottles of beer in their hands.

I watched as a lady who was walking towards the door pulled out a pocket knife and glared at the men. They just looked at her weirdly before continuing to drink. I flinched hearing the doors open, and slam shut as Marcus sat down. I relaxed my arms after flinching as he started the car.

It was around 2:28 when we arrived, the location was eerie, to say the least. There were many abandoned buildings and the river that was connected to the large Mississippi river. You could hide hundreds of bodies and no one would know.

"I need to check a few things so just stay here and don't get out, oh here," he said passing a knife, he continued, "You know how to use this, don't forget, do not get out."

I didn't think much of it before, but after getting gas, Marcus' aura had changed. There was something off about all this. I thought everything would be fine if I kept my mouth shut but there is no guarantee. I realize I was also their target, not just that man.
