Disciplines.

Alright so I know what I said but then I remembered that Yue is necessary for a future plot point, namely, the final exams for the first year that use secrets magic. Yue HAS to be MC's partner for this exam. So sorry. I really meant to change the plot but....it was only mildly edited.

If you have a problem with it, do tell.

"uuun!" Yue cried, rubbing her head where I had hit her, pouting as we walked to class the next morning.

"Jay....mean!"

"Ha?! Who told you to drink so much blood that I fainted?" I said, annoyed at her.

She literally drained half my blood.

Her belly was bulging like a pregnant woman.

Honestly, it was gross.

It was so bad the I had to use my Traveler clone to come here today, all drugged up. I even had to get an illegal psychic blocker from Professor Sunderland for this.

"Jay's blood is delicious. Like sweet, fizzy fruit juice!" She explained, licking her lips, "Can't resist~"

"Well try." I said pinching her cheeks.

"I didn't eat for 300 years...." She excused.

Well, that is a good reason for binging I suppose.

But draining half my blood?

That's excessive!

"What if I had died? Or if I didn't have another body to use?" I asked and Yue gave me a guilty look with puppy dog eyes.

I smacked her on the head playfully.

"Puppy eyes won't work on me. Not when I'm this drugged up anyway. I can't even feel my fingers right now." I giggled, wriggling my fingers.

They felt like dull sausages on my hand.

We entered the class and took our seats at the back as Dean Fogg entered the room sparing a long glance at Yue and raised an eyebrow but didn't say anything.

I knew what he meant.

I just shrugged.

"Talk later." I signed.

He understood and walked over to the front of the class, satisfied for now.

Tapping on the table, he eyed the class with an hawkish gaze and sat down on the desk as he began.

"Being a magician has always been in part, about accruing power. Power over yourself, the elements. Power over the future. The very world that exists around you. But power, as you all know, does not come cheaply. There are reasons we teach this curriculum precisely the way that we do.

Skipping around, focusing on the wrong things, lack of guidance, these are all extremely dangerous.

There are certain energies, certain spells which are far too powerful for one magician alone.

If you lose control, they will turn against you. They will kill you. They will consume you.

Change you into something else." He let that thought sit, simmer for a moment before he continued.

"Now that I have your attention. We will test your area of discipline. Your area of concentration. It is what you are and with the right guidance, you may safely rise to unknowable heights." He said and while everyone was looking at him starry eyed, he made a gesture with his fingers all sneaky-like.

I felt something parse against my wards and land in my bag.

A card.

"You will find your scheduled times and locations in your bags. That's all for today. Please be on time." He said and walked out, gesturing me to follow.

I checked my card and my consultation was right now. In the Dean's office.

I smiled.

Cheeky bastard.

.

"What's the meaning of this?" Henry scowled, pointing at Yue, "Brakebills is not a nursery."

"She's n-"

"I am not a child!" Yue cut in, angry, "I am over 300 years old. Older than your grandmother, your entire family you shrimp dicked bug eyed ogre!"

"Excuse me?" He said, shocked at the sudden burst of abuse hurled at him and then stopped in place, his eyes fixated on her teeth, doing a quick Mann Reveal to check her out.

"Jay." He looked at me with a look reserved for dogs that had pooped the carpet, "It hasn't been a month since the last...incident and you're already bringing in monsters from other worlds. You'd think you wouldn't need to be told how it's in poor taste but gere we are."

"Look Henry, just relax. Sit a bit straighter. It'll help get that stick out of your ass." I snapped.

He glared daggers at me but I didn't care.

He had just called Yue a monster and I didn't like that.

How dare he insult my choices like that?

"And listen up. We agreed on this. My girlfriend-"

"That's not your girlfriend." Henry interjected.

"She totally is and-"

"I'm not an idiot, Walker. I know a thing or two about relationships and girlfriends. She's not yours. So spit it out."

"Fine." I relented, "She's a contractor I hired because you were bitching about getting my girlfriend here."

"No. I get that part. What I mean is what is she? A vampire by the looks of it but her magic signature is off if that were the case."

"Yeah. She's a bit special. Ignore it. It's nothing serious."

"And your actual girlfriend couldn't be here because?"

"She's .... Indisposed at the moment."

"Her picture and details are still on the registry." He pointed out.

"Nothing a little Glamour can't fix, right?"

"Glamour strong enough to tamper with Brakebills warding?" He scoffed, "It'll wipe her mind."

"So no...." I guessed.

"Yes." He replied, "But in good faith, I will wipe your girlfriend's name from the registry. Say she dropped out in fear of another Beast attack."

"And make her a key." I pointed at Yue.

"Sure." He shrugged, "Why not. I have already broken enough rules, what's a couple more."

"Great." I clapped my hands.

"Now for the discipline testing."

"You already know yours, don't you? The psychic discipline of Traveling if your reports are to be believed." He asked.

"Yes. I meant for you to check hers." I said.

"Right." He leaned over, extending his hands to her.

"Give me your hands." He said

Yue looked over to me and I nodded.

Gingerly she extended her hands, placing them in his as he grabbed hers tight, his fingers twitching, casting a diagnostic spell of some sort.

"Do you like to learn?" He asked.

"Yes." Yue nodded .

"Her discipline is Knowledge. Specifically Applied Meta-math." He replied plainly.

Interesting.

Not only did she have a discipline despite being from another world, she also had a specialized sub discipline?

Wow.

"That easy?" I asked, surprised.

"Yes. Most vampires have a handful of disciplines. Illusion, Knowledge, Psychic. Few ever stray farther." He said, writing the specifics including recommended reading down for her on a piece of paper.

"I don't assume she'll be moving into the library attic, will she?"

The library attic was where the knowledge students lived.

Weird place to put them but who am I to argue?

"I want to stay with Jay." She hugged my arm, glaring at Henry.

"As you can see..."

"Yes. I figured as much. You can leave now. Send in the next student if you see them."

I nodded and we left, back to the dorm.

.

I watched as the second clone of me thrashed on the ground groaning in pain. A pain I was spared thanks to the medication I was on.

I was back at the dorm and in preparation for the rest of the dungeon raid, I had begun to slowly modify the second clone by feeding it a slurry of elixir and monster flesh that I had acquired in the Orcus dungeon.

And now he was down on the ground, spasming as the final enhancement was finished.

His muscles wriggled as if there were worms crawling under his skin and thin red lines byrsting with magic began to emerge on his body like veins.

His hair turned white, his eyes dulled, darkened a bit and his height grew by a good few inches above my own.

Then amidst sweat, tears and not a little puked up black blood he went prone on the floor gasping for breath.

"Sometimes I hate myself." He said, and I could feel the sentiment through my mental connection.

"Same buddy. Same." I said, injecting him with a stamina serum, helping him to his feet.

"Ready to conquer another world?"

I rolled my eyes.

"Do I have a choice?"

"No. But what you have are killer abs. And a cool, edgy look." I said, printing out a set of gear for him, when Yue pinched me, interrupting my little narcissistic skit.

"Stop playing with yourself." She scolded, " Let's go!"

I raised an eyebrow.

"Why are you so excited to go back to the place that was your prison for 300 years? I thought you'd be against it?"

Yue tilted her head in confusion.

"I just want to be useful.... as a Partner~" She teased.

"Oho! I like that enthusiasm! Partner!" I patted her head, "Alright, let's go."
