"I love you so much," Carissa whispered.

She inched up and pressed her lips to his. He gently cupped the back of her head, holding her to him as he kissed her with all the love and passion and fear of a man who'd almost lost the one person in the world who meant everything to him.

Carissa broke the kiss and gasped for breath, once again wincing. "Ow," she muttered.

"Are you sure you don't want me to get the nurse?" he asked, stroking her hair and the side of her face. "I'm sure they'll give you some pain medication if you need it."

"What do you think this is for?" She lifted her arm with the IV in it. "A slow drip of pain meds, antibiotics, and fluids."

"As much as I want to be selfish and keep you all to myself right now, your family and friends are waiting to see you." He ran the pad of his thumb along her bottom lip. "Doctor said only two visitors at a time, though."
