Chapter 29: Rage and Ruin
**Jake**
I want to throw something. I want to slam my fist into something hard. I want to pulverize something…anything. I didn’t know I could feel this much anger. Even when my father died, and I blamed the South Side, I didn’t feel as I do now.
“Calm down,” Nathan says, gently working his way toward me. “There’s nothing you can do about it now.”
“The hell I can’t,” I say, shouldering past him and stepping toward the door. Kait steps in front of me. Her eyes are dark and she looks tired.
“Jake,” she tells me. “If you go there now, you’ll get yourself killed. That’s exactly what they want, and you know that. They want to antagonize you. Don’t let them.”
Though her voice is sweet and melodic in my ears, my anger still burns brightly.
“She’s right,” Nathan agrees, always the one to use intellectual thinking when the situation calls for it. “John was clearly trying to pull something by taking Kait. He was trying to show her something that would prove you wrong.
