Breathing Blue

On a beautiful night as spring began, a woman was rushed to the hospital with her flustered husband beside her. She was going into labour and three hours later, two baby girls were born to the unlikely couple. They went home soon after, their little family feeling complete. The babies looked nothing like each other but the parents quickly realised how strong their bond was. The older would get fussy and the younger would wail if ever they were separated. They cooed and awed and found it adorable. Unbeknownst to the happy couple, the older was born with the power to protect and ultimately, destroy. Something they would find out the hard way.

If

"Snow!" Someone screams in my ear. My eyes fly open in shock and I jump, landing on the floor with a thud. I groan loudly as the evil witch who woke me up cackles from above me.

"Why Em, why?" I ask the witch sadly, still on the ground.

"We're going to be late for school Snow," she says once she sobers up. At this, I squeal and get up looking at the clock frantically. I frown when I see that its only 6.30. School starts at 7.20.

I turn to face the cackling witch again.

"You're evil Em, plain evil," I deadpan. She sends me an amused smile.

"I had to wake you up somehow," she says nonchalantly, rolling her eyes at me. It's Wednesday today. You would think that after two days of the same thing, I'd be used to it by now.

"Now, get ready before we're actually late," she says as she struts out of my room. I flop back down on the bed but find that I can no longer sleep. I begrudgingly wake up, grumbling all the way to the bathroom.

The water soothes me and I smile to myself, lathering my skin in my strawberry shower gel and my hair in my favorite coconut shampoo. I step out once I'm done, wrapping my towel around me and using another one to dry my hair as I pick out an outfit.

My closet is divided into two sections. Clothes that I'm comfortable with and clothes my mother thinks I should wear. I get she's just trying to help but she doesn't get it. I'm not as confident as she is. You must be really confused right now so let me clear it up.

Hey, my name is Snow White Adana Murphy. Why? You ask. Good question. My mom is obsessed with Disney. She's always wanted to have a daughter that was named after a princess. She said that when I was born, she took one look at me and saw Snow White. Corny, I know. I'm 17 years old and I'm 5'0 but if anyone asks, I'm five and a half. I know what you're thinking and yes, there is a difference. I have pale skin, light blue eyes, red lips, small button nose and long dark brown hair.

Now, here's the reason for my divided closet. I have a large chest, small waist, wide hips, thick thighs and a heavy bottom. I'm curvier than most girls my age and it makes me insecure. I got my body, my height and my hair from my mum, Marisol Bree Murphy. She's Latino. That's why she's always trying to boost my confidence. She kinda gets me.

My skin colour, eyes and lips, I get from my dad, Romano Walsh Murphy. He's half Irish half Russian. I have a twin sister, you know, the witch that just woke me up. Her name is Madeleine Anica Murphy. Sometimes I envy her. She got the best of both parents. She has caramel skin, hazel eyes, long copper hair and perfect pink lips.

She's taller than me at 5'6 and it irks me. Her frame is slender but curvy. Model perfect if you know what I mean. But she has a heart of gold, despite her evil nature, and I love her.

That is my story. Well, the introduction to my story but whatever, same difference. Now, back to the issue at hand. What to wear. I glance at the clock to see its already 7.00. I need to hurry up, it's a ten-minute ride to school.

I give up on picking a decent outfit, so I shrug on a pair of blue baggy jeans and a loose white top. It's hot outside but I carry a loose cream sweater just in case. Slipping into my favorite high tops, I rush out of the room, picking my phone up on the way.

"Morning princess," my dad greets when I rush into the kitchen. I smile and turn to him, wrapping my arms around his waist.

"Morning daddy," I greet quietly. Yep you guessed it, I'm a daddy's girl. He pulls back and pecks my forehead.

" Don't I get a hug daddy, " my mom calls from behind him and I laugh pulling away from my dad completely.

"Gross mum," I tell her, still laughing. She turns her amused glance to me.

"Morning to you too jellybean," she says playfully and I roll my eyes, hugging her too.

Beeeeeeep.

I jump at the loud sound my eyes widen when I glance at the clock. 7.10.

Oh fudgeballs, Em's gonna kill me. I grab a granola bar and my backpack, running out of the house and sliding into the passenger seat of the car.

Em throws me a glare before speeding all the way to school. She parks the car haphazardly and I almost fall in relief and kiss the ground when I get out. My legs are wobbly and I feel like I've been on a rollercoaster for hours but there's no time to dwell on that. We have two minutes to get to our first class.

We always have first, third and fourth period together. We step into class just as the bell rings. I plop down into my seat and desperately try to get my breathing in check. I should really go to the gym more, I think as I look around, observing that Em isn't panting as hard as I am. I scowl darkly, stupid cheerleading keeping her in stupid shape.

"Woah, what's with the glare Snow? Trying to melt your sister, why not just freeze her," the sound of that voice immediately perks me up and I turn in my seat to face the person.

"Jay Jay," I squeal excitedly, throwing my arms around his neck.

"When did you come in? I didn't even notice you sit down," I tell him, shooting him a sheepish smile. He laughs quietly.

"I know, you were attempting murder. Tsk tsk snowflake," he chides playfully.

I roll my eyes and open my mouth to answer his question when the teacher walks in, successfully cutting me off. I frown as I turn around to face him.

'Romeo and Juliet' he writes on the board and I ignore the urge to groan and hit my head on my desk. I sigh, opening the book. This is gonna be a very long day.
