Chapter 61

“Are you nervous about this, Ted?” Chris said.

“No, Sir.”

“You do understand why we’re here today? Mickey and I explained it to you.”

“Yes, Sir. Last time I saw her, Dr. Brannon talked to me about it.”

“If seeing those men upsets you, let us know,” Dr. Brannon said.

“Yes, Ma’am.”

The flat-screen monitor began to flicker, the flickering resolved itself into an image, and they saw several men sitting at a conference table.

At the head of the table, Chris recognized a familiar face—Judge Higgins.

Eventually, the judge stood and introduced both himself and the other men at the table, one of whom was Hank Williams, the prosecutor. Williams was thirtysomething and had very black hair, which he wore in a buzz cut. The other men were, respectively, two private defense attorneys and a public defender.

“I know Mr. Bottoms and his brother,” the judge said, after he’d introduced them, “but I’m not acquainted with the pretty young lady.”
