Dragon Slaying Part 1

We had left the city and headed for the base of the mountain. Along the way, we didn't talk much and only encountered a few low-level enemies like wolves and goblins. Once we arrived at the base, I led Olivia to a path carved into the side of the mountain; it was a staircase that led all the way to the top, and now all we had to do was climb.

It was going to be a long way up, it is a mountain after all. We started making our way up, one step at a time. At this rate, we would make it up in maybe half an hour, or if we're lucky maybe fifteen or twenty minutes. I looked over and saw Olivia was on guard, prepared to draw her weapon at a moment's notice; there was no reason to be worried that something would jump out at you here.

"You shouldn't have to worry; we won't see a lot of enemies up here."

She looked surprised and said…

"Wait, really?"

"Yeah. This is the dragon's territory, and the animals seem to know not to go here. A few wolves may appear, but you're not going to encounter them every 10 minutes like in the woods."

"Oh, that makes sense."

It's a good thing I read up on all that lore online.

She then put away her weapon, and we continued walking in silence.

After a few minutes, I asked a question…

"So what class are you trying to go for?"

"Huh?"

"Class, you know, like a mage, tank, swordsman…"

"Oh, that. Yeah, I think I'm going for a magic swordsman. I really wanna use some magic"

Wait, she was going for a magic swordsman?

"So, what's up with that armor then?"

"What do you mean?"

"Well, you look like a scout."

"Do I?"

"Yeah?"

"I just thought it looked cool, plus it's got some decent armor rating."

"But... never mind..."

"..."

Note to self: Tell her about the transmog system later.

"So, what class did you choose?"

"Me?"

"Dude, who else could I be talking to?"

Yeah, that was a pretty stupid question.

"Well, I went for a Paladin. It gives me good swordsman skills, and I can also use magic, but I'm limited to what magic I can use. I can use healing and buffs and other things, but not attacks."

"That's cool. But you really can't use magic to attack?"

"Well, most of the time I don't really need to attack with magic, but if I really need to I have a few ways."

"Like how?"

I thought for a few moments and eventually said…

"It's a secret."

"Boo; that's no fun."

Olivia seemed disappointed; she didn't seem to like my answer, but she didn't push any further.

-Later-

We were approaching the top of the mountain, maybe another few minutes and we would be at the peak. Something annoying was that the higher we got, the colder it became, and the colder it became the slower we were able to walk. We only ran into two groups of enemies on the way, and they were both groups of three wolves; it wasn't difficult, but rather really boring hiking to the top of the mountain. Usually, you can just teleport to the top, but since Olivia hasn't been there yet she needed to make the journey up at least once. Anyway, we kept walking and soon reached an archway; it looked like an entrance to the boss battle area.

"Get your blue potion ready."

Olivia nodded, and we both walked forward. The snow and fog were so thick we couldn't see that far ahead of us, but once we entered the boss area, everything immediately cleared up and what sat before us was a dragon. It was laying down, only raising its head to acknowledge us.

"hello… travelers…"

Olivia seemed surprised the dragon could talk, but that didn't last long before she responded.

"Sorry to disturb you... uhh... dragon?"

"I… have… a… name…"

"Why… are… you… here…"

It spoke in a fierce tone and seemed to dislike unnecessary chatter and beating around the bush.

Upon hearing the question Olivia looked at me for what to say next, and in response I just shrugged at her. She seemed to dislike this, but I hadn't expected to talk to the dragon at all, so I was just going to see what she would do next.

"I have come for... your wisdom! Great dragon."

"I… have… a… name…"

The dragon's tone changed. It started to sound annoyed.

"Well, I don't know your name. What is it?"

"hmph… ignorant… humans…"

"Leave… while… I… allow… it…"

It lowered its head but still kept an eye on us.

I looked at Olivia and said…

"Now!"

We both used our potions and unsheathed our weapons.

"Do… you… intend… to… fight?"

We said nothing.

"So… be… it…"

The dragon sat up and started stretching as it towered over us.

"So you're sure we can beat that thing?"

"…"

"Probably?"

"Why did you say it like that?"

"No rea-"

"Prepare… to… die…"

The dragon inhaled heavily, he was about to use his ice breath. We can take this opportunity to either try and hit a critical attack which will interrupt his ice breath, or we can split up and try to dodge it. Sadly, dragons only have two weak points, the part where the wings connect to their body, and its eyes, both of which are very difficult to hit.

"Start Moving!"

I took my bow and began firing arrows while running. It hit the wrong spot and bounced off its armored skin. I fired again, and the same thing happened. It seems the only way I'll hit a shot while moving is to get lucky.

*Tch*

"Go and try to get behind him! He's weak to fire, so try to use fire attacks!"

"Got it!"

While Olivia tries to get behind the dragon, I'll rush forward. That should stop it from using the breath attack, or at least make it very difficult to hit me.

I equipped a short sword and started running toward the dragon. When I got close, it stopped its breath attack and started trying to pummel me. First, it swung its claws, then used its tail; both of which missed due to how big and slow the attacks were.

"ENOUGH!"

The dragon shouted before slamming its feet on the ground. The arena shook, and I couldn't keep my balance very well. The dragon tried to use this opportunity to hit me with its claws. I swung my sword at the incoming claw, and while it did hit, all I managed to do was redirect and lightly scratch it. Sadly my attack didn't stop its momentum and the dragon used that to attack again. I couldn't dodge this time and was hit a short distance away. It did a decent amount of damage, but not nearly enough to warrant using a potion yet.

"TONIC!"

The dragon turned around, noticing Olivia behind him.
