The old man's thing has already been raised in reality. Imagine a game in the future, in those games, all the npc's are AI with consciousness, and one of them realizes the reality of it and practically goes crazy because of it. Of course, you can eliminate certain AI from the system, but that is the same as homicide because killing a sentient being is murder.
