Well I understand why he wants a light weapon, he mainly fought in naval battles and needed a light weapon for fast and nibble attacks but I don't understand why it doesn't have a guard, that type of weapon is for assassins because it is easy to conceal and inconspicuous but not suitable for direct and prolonged combat specially in great number, sword guards block the opponent's sword from sliding to the hand of the wielder because you know the swords are made of smooth metal which tend to slide off each other when struck, it could be debatable the he don't need it because he can block on one hand while attacking on the other but that's just arrogance...
