I can't help but feel disappointed in the protagonist, I thought he would be smarter.

I was close to removing this fic from my library if they caught it but we still have to see if this coach does something stupid

well this is better, with this it would be esay for mc to be with humans, once he truly trust her he can even let her capture him, not to be his pokemon but to avoid other trainers capture him accidentally in his human form

Good that he wasn't captured but, this should be a wake up call to show how weak he is and for his to focus on strength and knowledge, before his fun times this early in the Game. Don't want to get captured again after all and protect his family.
