This is fascinating. There's no such thing as a peaceful revolution and Nick is starting to realize that. People won't just hand over their power and wealth willingly. They won't hand over their lives even if sacrificing themselves would save a thousand people. If Nick wants to create a truly equal society, there will be bloodshed because most people don't want a truly equal society, especially those at the top who have it all. Sure, Nick is potentially treading on some dangerous grounds, but he's losing his naivety which is a good thing. The world will never change through kind words and actions alone.
One issue is that most people would probably agree that in our world you should treat everyone equally, not discriminate, and all lives should be equal. But it’s harder to say in this world where some people are literally better than others, having far more power and ability to protect others. Sure, Nick would probably argue that since these people are protecting others with their power then they are wasting their power and don’t deserve it, but realistically their power is acting as a deterrent to powerful forces outside the city.
Why are the comments full of communists ? They worked their entire life and for most of them deserved to be where they are. Obviously, in a perfect world, everyone should have a try to becoming an extractor but that's just impossible because not enough specters. That's a luck problem and that's how every society has worked since thousands of years. Killing someone like Albert can't ever be right, even to save the entirety of humanity. Saying this from my bed, cozy and all but if it happened in real life, everyone would choose to kill him (including me) , still does not mean it's right.
