I suspect the moat slows and stops time. To verify this, Sunny should shoot a mundane arrow to see if it stops midflight. Then test a shadow essence arrow to see if it does the same. Light is apparently making it across the barrier, a shadow might as well. If one of his shadows can cross the bridge, he (and Nephis) can shadow step to the other side.
