This cliff was worse than all the others. Before, at least some info was given. This cliff gave us nothing.

They could be killing each other to reduce the amount of awakened/masters/saints walking around in the waking world. Doing so might reduce the number of nightmare gates popping up, and if you're going to cull population you might as well do it to your enemy's.

I'm guessing it's a Lord of the Mysteries type deal - the components necessary to reach the next level involve consuming those at the same level (would explain them betraying Nephs dad too). Something like "to enter the 4th/5th nightmare, you must take the essence of a Saint/Sovereign"
