I think the author didn't know how to develop the mc so he decided to go the easy way "I'll torture him until he goes crazy, so I'll rewrite his personality" I've lost count of how many times I've seen this kind of story.

I have the feeling that the author just really want to write a super edgy character. I bet he recently watched something that might've influenced the story. Redo of Healer perhaps? or Rise of the Shield Hero?
