why is he only choosing male heirs. he comes from our own time, is he misogynistic in thinking that a woman cannot rule. I know that Hans is shown as intelligent, what about after him, is he under the impression that no woman from his dynasty will be good enough.
Zentmeister:Can you imagine trying to convince people in the 15th century that a woman can rule over an Empire? It will take at least several generations for society to catch up to such a progressive idea. Until now Berengar has managed to manipulate people into polygamy via biblical and ancient traditional arguments, and he still received backlash.
A thought about people complainin of sexism: It's easier for him to improve tecnology that people in general benefit and that he can produce and explain etc etc than to change the way people think and interact with each other in less than one generation... He already changed a lot really fast! At least women (probably) can work if the need arises already (before it was only family bussiness at best, s*xworkers and shady jobs).
seriously people it's the 15th century how easy do you think it will be to convince people then to even let women vote, not to talk of making a woman an heir to the throne he has to ease it in their mind gradually starting with minor government positions, until the men no longer see women as a breeding machine but as an equal. Unless you are interested in another civil war.
