the best justification for secular authority for Bear is Jesus's own preaching I remember a passage where a disciple asks of Jesus if they should pay their lords taxes when they should pay fealty only to God. Jesus replied: Give unto Caesar what is Caesar's and give unto God what is God's this is quite clearly establishing separation of Church and State. while upon this mortal coil our lords are our masters while our souls upon death are God's.
The story is good but it has many inconsistencies. At the start, it was mentioned that the MC would not go after his brother's life because he did not want to be labeled a kin slayer. Now he is suddenly interested in his death with no explanation as to why the change of heart. This is just one example of the many small things that break the immersion during the reading. Still, I am enjoying it immensily. Thank you for your hard work author!
