I feel like you’ve gotta have a swampert to take on water types, which usually have ice type moves.

I like camerup but it has a x4 weakness to water and nidoking is a bit better

1st choice- Gastrodon: Mostly because Storm Drain as an ability is too good to pass up, especially if you allow the use of 2 abilities in your fanfic as it also has- sandforce. Golurk takes too long to evolve at lvl 43, and I would say runerigus is much better to stay in the shadow if you could consider the protection provided. 2nd choice- Camerupt:Solid rock helps quit a bit with its weakneaaes, if provided with its 2nd ability Magma armor would be pretty useful utility wise as it could help in cold climates. (Sometimes you see the fics that make magma armor broken, such as making contact moves really non-viable as they can harm themselves upon contact with said armor.) 3rd choice- Claydol: Gotta be real if it's confirmed he's going to have a flygon, why persist with the same typing on the team. Claydol as a whole is so much more useful, especially if you factor in its move pool that could pretty much help the whole team. (Could set up Trick room, use teleport to get out of danger, ally switch to help pivot in team battles, rapid spin to get rid of hazards its pretty much the best utility you can get on a pokemon.)

Author, my choices are golurk, nidoking, and garchomp. Golurk has access to ghost type moves, which is the most consistent offensive type in Pokémon, combined with the ground typing that is able to deal with steel, the best defensive type in the Pokémon, and a type that can resist ghost. Nidoking has access to more coverage, making it more versatile, while having the ability sheer force, making those move powerful enough where it can be comparable to a move with the STAB boost. Finally, garchomp is a better all rounder than Claydol because it can take more hits. Combine that with the ability to swim(it still is a shark) and the ability to fly(it is a dragon), it makes for a great all rounder.

I like how the MC is focusing on Mastering the ground typing. A lot of fics that do have specialist just get loads of strong pokemon from the same type that wouldn't fit on a team and focus on each individually like a Generalist teaching them a lot of moves for coverage. And just abandoning the typing they were using I get coverage is good but you should focus on the team as a collective and how well they will do together. At the end of the day it doesn't matter because the Author is king

golurk (he needs a defense from psychics!) Nidoking has really good move pool Garchomp is stronger than claydol

Nidoking just because it has more versatility

Desertstorm
DesertstormLv3Desertstorm

Idk about the first choice as I'm not familiar with either of them but I would go with nidoking, the amount of TMs it can learn make it a very versatile Pokémon to have for any situation that may crop up. Garchomp over claydol. Saw someone say claydol was better and more versatile but after looking at the moves they both learn I'd pick garchomp. Not many trainers have fairy and dragon types so the chances of him coming across someone who would a Pokémon with garchomps weakness type is smaller than if it the author was to pick claydol who'd have ghost and dark types to watch out for before you start comparing the pro and con of the two. That and a pseudo legendary is a nice attention grab for the MC. But this should be his last member of the team as the resources and experience the MC would need will be alot. Not to mention it's dragon so it'll take longer to evolve and will need money for the TMs and move tutor's.

Golurk might be cooler, but Gastrodon fits the team better, since it can offer Izan a way to deal with Water Types. Garchomp is my favourite Pokemon of all time, but if Flygon is a set member of the team, he and Garchomp would end up competing for the same role, so I would choose Claydol. Nidoking has more coverage than Camerupt, so I would choose him.

I love Claydol ❤️❤️❤️

Hyperman
HypermanLv4Hyperman

My choices are Golurk, Camerupt and Claydol Garchomp is way too cost expensive and temperamental to train. Claydol has a wider variety of moves and can easily do Crowd control, area control and allow for teleportation and Trick Room if he has slower pokemon Camerupt's Solid Rock helps lessen the Water weakness and it can stop the major grass weakness a ground tean will have

from the suggested Pokemon and the winning options , does it mean that mc would become a ground type specialist? if so will he also try to become a gym leader !

I'll put my vote for Nidoking in as Izan is from Kanto so 1/3 of his team should be from Kanto and I mean the sheer amount of moves Nidoking can learn via TM is ridiculous. Flamethrower, Thunderbolt, Venoshock, Sludge Wave, Earthquake, Ice Beam, Stone Edge, Rock Slide and Surf. Plenty of setup moves like Sandstorm, Sunny Day and Rain Dance as well. I have no opinions on Golurk vs Gastrodon. I think Claydol would be good as it can teleport you away from dangerous situations but I'll still read whatever tou choose in the end.

Dunno which you went with between Claydol and Garchomp because of how you worded it in the next chapter, but I’d personally say Garchomp would be better later on, like early on I’d say Claydol would be better, but later on in the story I think Garchomp would be a better choice due to mega evolution, plus it’s higher base stats and such. Plus regarding ranger and such, when he gets to the point that he can actually manage to raise a Garchomp and make it strong, not much else will be a danger to him besides literal legendaries, extremely overleveled mons, or a lot of similarly leveled Pokémon either in a row or at once. At by a lot, I’m talking like 10-15+.

Camperupt all the way.

Is he only going to catch 6 pokemon or will he get more outside of his main team as substitutes or for utility, like Steelix, Excadrill, Magnezone, Corviknight, Gliscor, Swampert as substitutes and maybe a healing or psychic pokemon as utility, if he can raise the carry limit or something?
