Cuttlefish That Loves Diving
I'm surprised that his true body has been hidden within Utopia this whole time. I would've thought that, as he still needs to completely digest the Miracle Invoker potion, he'd still have to go around as Merlin Hermes granting wishes. I guess even that persona is also a marionette of sorts?
I have to say, this chapter is one of the most well constructed and excecuted chapters I have ever read in any book. The initial confusion on what you are reading, to the the slow realization at the end that Klein is controlling everyone makes this chapter good enough to be turned into a one chapter novel with minor edits. This is going to sit with me for a while.
this "I" chapter really is so well written..we can clearly feel and see how "Tracey" life goes from start till now.. kudos author.. man to do this ritual u really need to have strong fortitude or else u will fail for sure heck i'm not even surprise if Klein somehow go a bit lunatic after the ritual considering he have to control more than 100 persona at same time
This fragmented consciousness aspect of the ritual is probably what makes advancing to Attendant of Mysteries so dangerous. Even Zaratul was left in a half-mad sir something state from attempting it. He had to somehow use the Half-Fool’s town and Evernight’s concealing ability to keep a fragment of himself separate to restore himself. I think he did that keep a part of himself from being overcome by all the thoughts from his clones.
A change happened. Klein didn't do that before. He started doing it with the city. It's impressive, he's five thousand people at once, yet still himself(I think). It's the complete sublimation of his Faceless realization, he acts, to everyone, including himself, as someone, to the deepest level, and that act is a mystery by itself, for a human wouldn't be able to do this without breaking. At the same time, such act of complete immersion somehow changes the mystic spaces, be it by creating a presence on the spirit world, maybe even creating their own seq of consciousness, even though this is all one single person in the end, it's a performance for all and himself at the same time, without caring even caring about his own identity, a complete sublimation of the Magician and Clown sequences. All the while, a city that doesn't exist is bizarre, one person being five thousand is chilling to the depths of the soul, that's the Bizarro Sorcerer. This is a great chapter, it is the concretization of all of the potions, a glimpse at the idea the author wants to give to us about the authority and way of the potion, it is also a chapter to remind us of our main character's growth, dangers and everything else. This author knows what he is doing.
All the high level Seer rituals seem to really emphasize the strength of mind of the Beyonder even in the face of their own identity undergoing some sort of fragmentation. Unlike the other ones that had the ritual itself assist in anchoring the mind, this is really a pure test of the Seer's mental fortitude.
Wow, it's amazing how different this chapter feels just from changing to a first person view of his marionettes. And it definitely gives some jarring, but unique insight into Klein's current state as he maintains the town... The way the whole disconnected consciousness is presented is very well done.
