MC is just completely oblivious. Story is filled with stuff like "little did the MC know, his body was being purified" and "the MC got another martial arts manual, but he doesn't know how to use them". Is some basic knowledge about the setting too much to ask for from a MC?

Actually yes. Basically the MC is a frog in the well about Martial Arts. While he has some ideas about the physical side of Martial Arts, the original body has a weak rural family background and no strong backers. A major part of the story going forward is him starting to fill in the blanks in knowledge and developing himself.
