Review Detail of JesReadin in The Silent Concubine

The story of mute bride, Shen Yu and the powerful King of the North, Xiang Xiao is not one that I would call cute (as seen in some reviews here) but it does have plenty of sweet moments. There are too many lies, manipulations, and political machinations to be a cute and fluffy story. Rather, this comic is full of angst, betrayal, and regret. Shen Yu started as a sneaky replacement bride but he himself was naive and sweet. His new husband was a ruthless hedonist who inspired fear in enemies and allies alike. While their story seemed to get off to a promising start, it doesn’t take too long for the underlying motivations come to light. And from there I spent chapters of wanting to make certain characters suffer. It’s definitely a good story, with some lovely art. The ending was sweet and by that time you are more than ready for this pair to have some happiness together. Their feelings were forged in fire and they ended up being good for each other after significant emotional growth on both sides.
