Wow, this book. I've been with it since two years ago and just... wow. The translation is spot on and actually pretty good, considering there are notes in case readers get confused with someone character surnames, so I don't have any problems with that. It's the story I'm disappointed about. Warning: From chapter 1000 or so, I started reading the Chinese raw instead, so i might spell some translated names wrong. I've actually finished the raw version on 69shu.com at 4257 chapters. This book was made into a drama series in December 2020 (且听风吟), but I kept track with the timeline of the original author's update on the raw version and to be precise, the moment the story went downhill was went they shot the movie and made that ending before the author did. Okay, the spoiler filled review is about to begin so if you want some shocking revelations, read on at your own risk. Around chapter 2000 (excuse my memory if I got this wrong) the antagonist since the prologue, Zhuo Qing Luan finally appears and her battle with Feng Wu begins. Spoiler 1: Feng Wu something something something Zhuo Qing Luan but something something (I'm not evil. Y'all can enjoy the story 😈). Spoiler 2: In chapter 3800+ it was mentioned that a certain antagonist was about to make a comeback, but up until the grand finale, HE/SHE DID NOT. HE/SHE VANISHED COMPLETELY. The story development was capturing, but as I read on, it started to feel old and repetitive. It became FL goes to new place, meets new enemies who are usually girls who are jealous of her, commence duels where everyone underestimates FL while admiring her beauty, then begins the face slapping. However, remember what I said about the movie? The original author went on a hiatus for two months and after that, her writing style completely changed. No more over description and mentioning FL's beauty and how many new guys fall for her. Yay but nay. BIG SPOILER AHEAD!!! There's a new land beyond the nine kingdoms. Apparently, Mu Jiu Zhou came from there. The last part of the story took part there and I was expecting some world building BUT NO. The original author seemed to be in a hurry to rush the last couple chapters. I'll skip to the point: There were too many unanswered questions, and plot holes. All shown below and open for speculation, but THERE ARE NO ANSWERS: #1 Remember when FL met Xuan Yi's grandfather Old man Fang or something? She found a spirit stone well in his backyard that was allegedly formed by the tears of Mu Jiu Zhou during some ancient demon war I'm sure was mentioned early on and many people forgot. Those were his first tears when the woman he died in the war. Curious curious. Who was the woman he loved? I had so many theories and speculations. FL lived 3 lives. First as Mu Jiu Zhou's disciple, second as a modern world assassin, third she came back to the world in her first life and became his disciple again. Wonder how she died in her first life... #2 ML Jun Lin Yuan is the crown prince of Jun Wu kingdom. His birth mother died. His father, the emperor, watched her give birth and named him crown prince the second he was born. He even had a big sister once upon a time but she died (patience till much later or read the raw to find out). In the end, it was revealed Jun Lin Yuan not only wasn't the son of his supposed father, but wasn't even from their land. Yep, he's from THAT PLACE Mu Jiu Zhou came from. the place everyone didn't know existed/ the people who knew hid the existence of. I have a question for you: how can a baby you watched be born under your eyes not be yours? And ML's mother was always a mysterious figure anyway, no past, no description and no name. When FL went to that old land across the sea, she learnt some juicy secrets, aka the emperor of that land had a crown prince years ago who everyone thought had died of sickness a week after he was born but was actually "kidnapped" to the land with nine kingdoms far away. Isn't hard to guess who that baby is except THE TIMELINE DOESN'T MATCH UP AT ALL. Furthermore, in the absolute second to last chapter, the author totally forgot about that and whipped up another identity out of thin air! Did I mention Mu Jiu Zhou once was the emperor of that land but he quit and left? It's ok, it'll be revealed pretty soon in the book. Since he was the creator of the Nike kingdoms and fought in the demon war 10,000+ years ago he's supposed to be ancient right? So why did he end up being ML's uncle? I am honestly refraining from spoiling too much but I can't and you really were warned anyway. So ML's identity was botched just like that. Wrong timeline and wrong everything. #3 FL's parents. I can't say much since there's too many gray area and wonderful bombshells here, but I can tell you they're both alive and not well. FL's mother is actually xxx from xxx and her dad is a -@$+*/!. It was also never mentioned what happened to them in the end. Her mother has no memories whatsoever and the smarts of a little child because she was poisoned when she was young. Also, she never got cured because she got no screen time after chapter 4100+. #4 Nothing major except a character that was mentioned dead in a war somehow was very much alive by the last chapter. Basically, the ending was a potpourri of everything that disappointed me. Do I regret spending two years of my life on this book? I don't. But do I regret investing so much emotion and hope and brainpower in it? Hell yes. All my theories and guesses were never proven. I won't say what happened to the main characters in the end because I have severely rose tinted glasses on right now and I might have a heart attack (in case you're wondering, I did when I read the final chapter). In a good way, readers were left to imagine the ending by themselves, but the not knowing the full truth was torture. To be honest, I have a sneaking suspicion the ending was written by someone who didn't read the first 400 chapters of the book. Ah well, each for their own. Enjoy the face slapping scenes because I can assure you they never get old!
