The description of the story explains that it's a fanfiction involving two related fandoms, Neverwinter Nights: Hordes of the Underdark, and Baldur's Gate. Both are RPG/D&D style simulator games that came out some time ago. You don't have to be entirely familiar with either game, or Forgotten Realms, or Dungeons and Dragons to read this story, although knowing at least one of those fandoms/universes will greatly help you understand the world that these characters live in. Having a passing knowledge of the Drizzt books would also help with the Underdark chapters.
