First, thank you for checking out my book! You have interesting questions, and to answer that, I thought about Nicolaus' view about honesty and deals since he has been in the field for long. He honors and commits to them strictly. While it is possible for the Mikael's father to marrying him off instead, the problem came from Nicolaus' view about transparency. Another thing is, Mikael is expected to take up his father's title. So, it's important to think that some nobles, only in my book's world dynamic, thinks highly of their identity. If an heir marries another heir, there's a risk of one family's legacy eventual disappearance and some sort. The loss may not happen if there's an agreement of the children's surname adoption, but that's a whole long thing to explain! hehe! Also, marriages is blessed by their monarchs too, so Mikayla and Nicolaus is 100% expected to marry, not Mikael. You can say, it's like lying to the King, too. I hope I answered your questions!
