It's like thinking that because someone makes a joke you can go and poison them. Logically that's wrong and Lily would surely have supported it if he hadn't been so malicious and vengeful as to want to inflict pain on others. The marauders are idiotic teenagers who play pranks, but that's normal for teenagers and immature people, what's not normal is wanting to poison or put someone in the hospital.
