I don’t think someone would say that to a child, it would be something they say in their heads as they feel guilty but you never console someone by saying “If I had arrived earlier your family would still be alive” it’s something that they would say inside their head or to another person, not the one they are trying to console.

There's many different things he could do, like joining the army or going to learn magic and becoming a court mage or learning magic and then joining the empire. Joining one of the various guilds or making a mercenary group. Since you have to remember as your going for the realistic world you don't have to be contained to what's available in the game and can do all sorts of things.
