Exactly, Evernight is his power and then stuffs like Embers of Twilight, Shadow Steps, Black Hole and the likes are Abilities created out of Alex's understanding of Evernight.

Oh, no it doesn't work like that. To utilize Evernight, Alex requires gestures. However, due to the fact that his subordinates are connected to him, they can utilize some of his abilities without gestures (NB: Only Abilities they are able to comprehend)
