Actually his words make perfect sense if the situation was like it was before. If I was in is shoes i would have done the same thing. Afterall she would spend her time cultivating and possibly live an extremely long life away from the city, while he would live a normal mortal life (not that there is nothing wrong with it). As a father he obviously want the best for his daughter so since they don't really love each other it's definetly better to break off the engagement.
