this book was lovely and the characters had great depth. I both loved and hated the plot twist of the middle of the book though. I loved it because it was so unexpected but I really disliked that the first "life" gave more depth to the next generation and side characters than the second one did. I felt like the back story of miao jing should have been kept way more elusive if the novel was going to end with it. it felt like the 3rd or 4th time I had been given that characters backstory and it took all of the impact out of the ending. overall a good read though.

i really loved this novel but im kind of disappointed with the end.... it fell really flat and felt rushed. I loved hearing the love story at the end but we already knew pretty well the whole story. maybe if we hadn't been told so many of the details earlier then it would have been more impactful. but ig its good to get an end?
