Maybe once he learned a bit more about the other man’s past, he could find some ways to help him, maybe offer a hand up toward whatever ambitions or secret goals Mal might have. Although he was an excellent mechanic, at least by all Dan had heard or discovered for himself, that was probably not the ultimate pinnacle of his life plan. Even if his stepbrother had proved to be a total disappointment, Dan had often wished for a brother, a partner, someone to mentor, support, and share with. It appeared Mal was very much on his own, so that might appeal to him, too.

Dan shook his head with a rueful grin as he garaged the truck and continued on down to the corrals. I suspect I’m getting way ahead of myself here. Slow down, bud, and let things sort out as they will. First thing is to get this initial challenge and threat settled. If it’s Darrel, so be it. Even Dad couldn’t tolerate this kind of treachery.
