Unravelling the Past

Li Zhen stood outside the door of Li Mei's humble dwelling, his heart heavy with a mix of emotions. It had been weeks since Li Mei's return to the village, and while her physical wounds were healing, there were still many unanswered questions lingering in Li Zhen's mind. "It's me, Zhen. I brought some food for you," Li Zhen knocked gently on the door, calling out softly after taking a deep breath,

"Come in, Zhen. Thank you for the food," the door creaked open, revealing Li Mei's weary but welcoming face. Her eyes brightened at the sight of her brother, and a small smile graced her lips.

Li Zhen entered, carefully setting down the basket of food he had prepared for her. He took a moment to glance around the small, sparsely furnished room, noting the simple belongings that Li Mei had accumulated during her time away. It was evident that her life beyond the village had been vastly different from the tranquillity they were accustomed to.

"Are you feeling better today?" Li Zhen asked with a hint of seriousness, taking a seat beside his sister.

"Yes, I am getting stronger every day, thanks to the care and support of everyone here," Li Mei nodded, her gaze fixed on her hands as she fidgeted slightly.

"I'm glad to hear that, Mei. But there's something I need to know. I want to understand why you left the village all those years ago and what happened during your time away. The uncertainty has been weighing heavily on my mind," Li Zhen nodded, his eyes filled with concern.

"I know I owe you an explanation, Zhen, and I'm willing to share everything with you. It's just... it's not an easy story to tell," Li Mei's expression faltered, and she took a deep breath before meeting her brother's gaze.

"I know it won't be easy, but I need to know. We are family, Mei. The Li stay together, right? And we've always shared our burdens and joys," Li Zhen reached out and gently placed a hand on Li Mei's shoulder, offering comfort and support.

"You're right, Zhen. I should have come back sooner and faced the consequences of my actions. You do know how much I love to paint, right? So seeking inspiration beyond the confines of our village is what I strived for. I wanted to see the world, to experience life outside tradition and duty," Li Mei nodded, her eyes glistening with unshed tears.

Li Zhen listened attentively as Li Mei's voice trembled with emotion. He knew that his sister had always been headstrong and independent, but he had never imagined the extent of her journey and the hardships she had faced.

"I travelled far and wide, Zhen," Li Mei continued, her voice tinged with sadness. "I met people from different walks of life and experienced both beauty and cruelty in the world. But with every step I took away from the village, I realized how much I missed the freedom to express myself through my art, to paint the world as I saw it."

Li Zhen nodded, understanding that his sister had embarked on a journey of self-discovery, one that had ultimately led her back to where her heart belonged.

"I made mistakes along the way," Li Mei confessed, her eyes filled with remorse. "I got involved with people whose intentions were not pure, and I found myself entangled in dangerous situations. But I also learned valuable lessons about resilience, forgiveness, and the true meaning of family."

"Mei, I'm just glad you're back. Our village is not the same without you, and I've missed you every day that you were away," Li Zhen's jaw tightened, his heart raging in flames at the thought of those who had caused harm to his sister.

"I'm so sorry, Zhen. I never meant to cause you pain or worry. I should have come back sooner," Li Mei's tears finally spilt over, and she reached out to embrace her brother tightly.

"It's in the past now, Mei. What matters is that you're here, and we will face the future together, just like we always have," Li Zhen held her close, his heart filled with a mixture of relief and understanding.

"Mei, what have you done!? How could you keep such a dangerous secret from us!? You were risking your life, and the child's life too!" Li Zhen's heart sank at the revelation, his anger towards those who had harmed his sister escalating.

"Zhen, I didn't want to burden you with the knowledge of my involvement with Liang Wei. I knew the consequences of our relationship, but I chose to be with him despite the risks. It was my decision, and I was prepared to face whatever came our way," Li Mei looked at her brother, her eyes strong with resolve.

Li Zhen struggled to comprehend the complexity of his sister's choices. On one hand, he understood her desire for love and freedom, but on the other hand, he couldn't ignore the dangers she had faced and the potential risks to their family and village.

"If that's what you desire, then we will protect you and the baby, Mei. But we also need to be vigilant," Li Zhen said firmly. "There are people who may seek to harm you because of your connection to the Emperor."

"I know, Zhen. I will do whatever it takes to protect my child and now, our village as well. But I won't let fear dictate my actions anymore. I've returned to the village to face my past and to build a future for our family, no matter the challenges that lie ahead," Li Mei nodded, her expression resolute.

Li Zhen admired his sister's determination and bravery. He knew that Li Mei had grown and changed during her time away, and he respected her choices, even if they were difficult to accept.

"Mei, we are family, and we will face whatever comes together," Li Zhen said, his voice filled with resolve. "We will protect you, support you, and love you, no matter what."

After Li Mei's confession, Li Zhen couldn't shake off the feeling that there were still many unanswered questions surrounding her journey and the dangers she had faced. With a heavy heart, Li Zhen made his way to Chief Changming's residence. He found the wise village leader sitting outside, gazing at the tranquil beauty of the village. Li Zhen approached him with respect, knowing that his request was selfish and would put an enormous burden on the chief.

"Chief Changming, I have something to ask of you," Li Zhen began, his voice serious and determined. "I need to leave the village for a while to uncover the truth behind what happened to Li Mei and who tried to harm her. I know it's a selfish request, and I understand the responsibilities I hold here, but I can't rest until I have answers."

"Zhen, I know how much you care for your sister, and I can see the pain and anger in your eyes. It is natural to seek answers and justice for what she went through. But leaving the village is no small decision, and your duty here is of utmost importance," Chief Changming regarded Li Zhen with a knowing look, understanding the turmoil within his heart.

"I understand, Chief. But if I don't find out who's behind the assassination attempt and if there are more threats, I won't be able to protect Li Mei or the village properly. I promise I won't take long," Li Zhen nodded, acknowledging the truth in the chief's words.

The chief sighed, knowing that he couldn't deny Li Zhen's request. He had seen the determination in the young man's eyes, and he knew that even if he refused, Li Zhen would find a way to leave.

"Very well, Zhen. I will permit you to leave the village temporarily to pursue your investigation," Chief Changming said. "But promise me this - be careful, and don't let your emotions cloud your judgment. I understand your anger and worry for your sister, but you must stay focused on the task at hand."

"Thank you, Chief. I promise I will be cautious and do my best to uncover the truth," Li Zhen nodded solemnly.

"Remember, Zhen, the village needs you too. You have responsibilities here, and while you're away, I will do my best to handle matters in your absence," the chief said, a hint of concern in his voice.

Li Zhen bowed respectfully. "I am grateful for your understanding, Chief Changming. I will make sure to return as soon as I have answers."

With the chief's blessing, Li Zhen began preparations for his journey. He packed his necessities, knowing that he might be gone for an uncertain period. His heart ached at the thought of leaving his sister and the village behind, but he knew he had to do this for them and himself.
