Jammu and Kashmir - Paradise on Earth
With a renewed sense of purpose and adventure, Aadhvik and Sara set their sights on Jammu and Kashmir, often referred to as "Paradise on Earth." The region's breathtaking beauty, rich culture, and vibrant history promise an unforgettable experience.
Their journey began in Jammu, the winter capital of the state. They visited the Vaishno Devi Temple, one of the holiest Hindu shrines, nestled in the Trikuta Mountains. The trek to the temple was arduous, but the spiritual atmosphere and the devotion of the pilgrims filled them with energy and determination. The panoramic views from the temple complex were awe-inspiring, adding to the sacred experience.
Next, they travelled to Srinagar, the summer capital, renowned for its stunning landscapes and houseboats on Dal Lake. They stayed in one of the charming houseboats, waking up to the serene beauty of the lake. They enjoyed a shikara ride, floating on the crystal-clear waters, surrounded by the majestic Himalayan mountains. The Mughal Gardens, with their meticulously manicured lawns and vibrant flowers, added to the city's enchanting ambience.
In Srinagar, they also explored the historic Shankaracharya Temple, perched atop a hill, offering a panoramic view of the city and the Dal Lake. The old city, with its narrow lanes and bustling markets, provided a glimpse into the rich cultural tapestry of the region. They savoured the local cuisine, relishing dishes like rogan josh, dum aloo, and the famous Kashmiri kahwa.
From Srinagar, they journeyed to Gulmarg, a picturesque hill station known for its snow-covered slopes and vibrant meadows. In winter, Gulmarg transforms into a premier skiing destination, attracting adventure enthusiasts from around the world. Aadhvik and Sara enjoyed the thrilling experience of skiing down the slopes and taking in the breathtaking views of the surrounding peaks.
Their exploration continued to Pahalgam, a tranquil town located on the banks of the Lidder River. They trekked to the stunning Betaab Valley, named after the Bollywood movie "Betaab" that was shot there. The valley's lush green meadows, surrounded by snow-capped mountains, provided a perfect setting for relaxation and reflection. They also visited the Aru Valley and Chandanwari, enjoying the scenic beauty and the serene atmosphere.
In Leh, the largest town in Ladakh, they were captivated by the stark, otherworldly landscapes. They visited the Leh Palace, a historic nine-story palace offering panoramic views of the town and the surrounding mountains. The monasteries of Hemis, Thiksey, and Diskit provided a deep insight into the Buddhist culture and spirituality of the region. The sight of the towering Maitreya Buddha statue at Diskit Monastery set against the backdrop of rugged mountains, was awe-inspiring.
Their journey in Ladakh also included an adventurous drive to the Pangong Lake, one of the highest saltwater lakes in the world. The ever-changing hues of the lake, reflecting the surrounding mountains, left them spellbound. They camped by the lake, experiencing the pristine beauty and the tranquillity of the remote location.
In Kargil, they visited the Kargil War Memorial, paying tribute to the brave soldiers who fought in the 1999 Kargil War. The memorial, set against the backdrop of the towering mountains, was a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by the Indian armed forces.
Their exploration of Jammu and Kashmir concluded in the charming town of Sonamarg, known as the "Meadow of Gold." The lush meadows, surrounded by towering peaks and glistening glaciers, provided a perfect setting for the final leg of their journey. They took a pony ride to the Thajiwas Glacier, enjoying the pristine beauty and the fresh mountain air.
