Chapter 26: We’re A Team

*Claire*

From what I learned about him, Nathaniel is not unnerved easily. He is not the shy type. Dark and mysterious, sure, but not shy. I watch as Nathaniel is visibly shaking after he reaches into the torn coat on the body and removes a pocket watch.

Nathaniel’s eyes are wide and there is a tremor in his hands. I see him take a step back away from the body. He looks up to the rooftops and streets nearby. I need to figure out what is going on.

“Nathaniel?” I ask, taking a step toward him. The other officers are nearby, so I keep my voice low. “What is it? Does the watch mean something?”

Nathaniel is rigid as a board, eyes unmoving from the bloody silver device in his hands. For a moment, I don’t think he heard me when his eyes flick over to meet mine. Those dark, charcoal black eyes meet mine, and I know instantly something is horribly wrong.

“They know,” he mutters. My heart rate jumps through the roof and throbs in my throat.
