Chapter 23: Deal or No Deal

“I’m listening,” says Claire. Even in her slightly altered state and her injuries, she is still making an effort. I am interested in seeing her reaction to my proposal and take a single breath before diving straight into it.

“My proposition is this – we should work together,” I say. I can already see the confusion on Claire’s face.

“We are working together. You can’t trick me,” she mutters as she readjusts the ice pack on her head.

“We are working in tandem, but this would be an official partnership. Wates is going to be out of commission for at least a few weeks and will be, forgive the expression, riding the desk. Your injuries are far less severe and, knowing you, waiting around is not your forte,” I say.

“I can’t just leave my partner,” counters Claire.
